    Constant Hunger

    Hey everyone!

I have been hungry constantly (can't fill my appetite) since March 2009. Food sometimes make the hunger go away briefly. The hunger is sometimes painful too. I have done blood work (to check for diabetes, my thyroid etc) - everything is good. I've also checked for ulcers - I'm good there too. I'm 22 years old, weigh 164 and I'm 6' 2". I usually eat regular, well-balanced meals. Since the hunger started, I've been eating a lot more - sometimes when I'm eating the hunger stops, but it returns in full force as soon as I'm done eating. I've been eating 5 BIG meals every day and can't gain any weight. Sometimes I can eat upwards of two pounds without stopping! Hungry all day, when I wake up, when I go to sleep.

I also take some anti-anxiety drugs/ sleeping pills (I'm a chronic insomniac) that have been found to "increase appetite" (munchies) - but nothing like this. I've been taking them for 8 years and this feeling is not the munchies- I've messed around with the drugs a little bit to see if they change my hunger and no changes have happened. I take very little of these medications (and am getting an average of 7 hours of sleep at night). Since I have anxiety - it only increases because of my hunger. At night, I often eat until the drug makes me fall asleep. Messing with the drugs have been a wild goose chase that just makes me more anxious.

I have a history of acid reflux - but it doesn't feel quite like that - I'm trying TUMs right now (seems like not helping) and trying prilosec too (it fixed my reflux in the past).

Some people tell me it's just that I'm going through adolescent hunger later in life - but this goes beyond.

I've seen three physicians, no one has been able to help. It's very frustrating. Should I see some kind of specialist or am I seeing the wrong doctors? Does anyone know anything about this? I'm DESPERATE!

    Thanks!

Did they test you for parasites, such as tapeworm?

It is unusual for one's food needs to suddenly increase after age 20. You didn't start exercising a lot more, did you?

    Jane-
Thanks for the reply. I've thought about that a little bit, but don't know much. The Doc's that mentioned that only asked
    1. Have you done any traveling? (I said no).
    2. Do you have any bowel irritation? (I said no).
    3. Any whole food in your feces? (I said no).

And that was the end of the conversation-

Is there more to consider? How do I check?

    Thanks again!

    Re: Constant Hunger

    constanthunger,

As jane suggests, a parasite might be involved.

Another thought is that there is some underlying condition that is not allowing you to absorb nutrition. Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) comes to mind. Or a severe vitamin/mineral imbalance.

Regardless, I would pursue this with your doctor, insisting on tests to find out the cause. If your doctor doesn't seem concerned ("I can't fit you into my medical textbook categories, so therefore you don't have a problem"), then change doctors.

Good luck finding out what's happening.

Have them check your hormones and see if there is something out of wack.

I think something has gotten out of wack and they just have to find out what. Maybe it is time too, to change the anxiety drugs and look close at all the medications you are on.
