Can juicing for health be bad for you?

    Hello,

I started juicing about 6 months ago. I have the Omega 400 VRT juicer and use mostly veggies with some fruit to make the juice somewhat palatable. I stopped taking my two cholesterol drugs (which were causing me to be overly tired and very achy) at the same time I started juicing in hopes the juicing would eliminate the need for these drugs.

My most recent lab work shows a borderline diabetes as well as cholesterol way out of the normal range in every possible way. (the bad cholesterol is too high, the good cholesterol too low etc.) I am now starting to question whether the benefits of juicing outweigh the side effects of cholesterol drugs. My diet has not changed at all. In addition to juicing, I eat veggies for lunch and at every meal and fruit for snacking. Any thoughts? Comments? Thank you!

Fruit and fruit juices have a high sugar content, especially the fruit juices.
This could be contributing to the borderline diabetes result. When a lot of insulin is secreted to deal with the sugar, it also raises the cholesterol level. Check out low carb diets and fruits and veggies with a low glycemic index. You can get this info on the internet or at the bookstore.

    Rebecca,

thank you for your informative reply. I guess ever action has a consequence and one has to do things right. I am glad that there is a simple enough explanation for my recent less than ideal lab results and of course that it is reversible! I had better start reading......!

    Yep.

Juicing is a fad that is very popular these days. But eating the whole fruit or vegetable is much better for you. Juicing removes the fiber and turns it into sugar water!

rebecca43 have you heard of glycemic index? Most people eating the standard american diet develop insulin resistance which leads to the bad cholesterol numbers. The Southbeach diet book explains and describes how to eat to avoid sugar spikes. If you also need weight loss check out Atkins.

My recent lab results showed a fairly high potassium level. This is definitely a concern because high potassium level affects the heart and could make it stop. I was told by a dietician to stick with eating my veggies raw or cooked and to cut back on my fruit intake. If I juice, it should not be every day then have no additional fruit or veggies on those days. Many would agree with JohnfromIN.....eat your fruits and veggies whole.

I would recommend trying your vegetables whole and without juicing as recommended. Don't forget your protein and water. Please make sure you are still eating balanced. Perhaps seeing a dietitian might help. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply, Kickingit. I will try for a better balanced diet, including enough protein, and watch my portion size. I have stopped juicing for now to see how things go.
