Prolonged digestive problems, worried it could be colon cancer

I'm a 20 year old male and I have been having issues for a few months now. I couldn't help but google my symptoms and what is going on and then get scared by all these stories about colon cancer.

Back in January I experienced constipation, it lasted a couple weeks and then everything was back to normal, so I didn't think much of it. About a month later I was feeling out of it and nauseous one day and later that night I vomited a few times. I think that this was just from something bad I ate and not related to the other problems I started having after this but who knows.

Anyway after that I was constipated again, and by constipation, I was still able to have a BM everyday, but I would have to strain and it would be much harder to get out than usual, I would also feel like I had to go other times of the day but nothing would come out. This continued for a few weeks and I also was having abdominal pain, mainly in the upper left area but it wasn't solely confined to one area. It also wasn't constant, and would come and go, maybe more noticeable after eating, not sure if there is a pattern though.

Things actually started to improve a bit, though I still had abdominal pain, again mainly in the upper left, my BMs were more productive and I didn't need to strain.

But then one night I woke up in the middle of the night and started vomiting and had diarrhea. Again, this very well could have been something I ate, and maybe worth mentioning I had just spent a week on a cruise ship before this happened. Either way I decided to go to the ER, I explained what was happening with the vomiting and diarrhea, but also mentioned the abdominal pain. They took a blood test and a urine test and they both came back normal. They said it was probably stomach flu and the abdominal pain could be gastritis, and gave me medication for that.

I took the medication for a week but there wasn't any improvement. I was still constipated (again, still able to have BM every day but I had to strain and they always felt incomplete). In the past few weeks it has been more so an alternating between constipation and diarrhea, all while I am still getting these pains in my abdomen, mostly the upper left but there are other areas too. I have not noticed any specific foods that cause the diarrhea or constipation, it seems to go back and forth regardless. Something I noticed is maybe a possible lump/swollen area on the upper right of my abdomen? But I can't really tell if it is something, if it was always there, or if it actually is nothing and just my mind trying to find something.

I made an appointment with a GI doctor weeks ago but the earliest they could get me in was April 18, so I've just been having to deal with this for the past month. It was also harder to get an appointment since I'm in college and can't really miss my classes.

Anyway, I'm just worried that this could be something really bad. I know I am only 20 so colon cancer is very rare and there are a lot of other things this could be, and I have never had any problems before this, but I can't help but keep that thought in the back of my mind.

Hi Hon...none of the symptoms you are mentioning here sound like Colon Cancer; they do sound possibly like your gallbladder is acting up.
The GI doctor will go through this with you- and you should explain your fears- if you are truly serious about ruling out colon cancer, they can scope you (colonoscopy) which is how it is diagnosed.... but I would be asking about your gallbladder- and asking for a HIDA scan- which will let you know if it is functioning properly.

The good news is colon cancer is 100% curable if caught early and at your age, it would defiantly be curable and "early"- although it is HIGHLY unlikely you should be concerned about this..

Please let us know how your doctor appt goes...April 18th is coming quick!

Went to the GI doctor on Friday. They suspected possible gastritis so she prescribed medication for that (this is the same thing they told me a month ago at the ER and the medication they gave me didn't work, so I'm not confident this will change anything).

She also recommended I take fiber supplements and stool softener to help with the constipation. I haven't noticed any improvement, but it has only been a few days so I'll be patient.

I got a blood test and it showed I had high biliruben. Unsure what that means but they want to take another test in one month.

I am also going back this Friday for an ultrasound of my liver, galbladder, and pancreas.
