Im really confused on celiac/gluten/wheat, some help?

Basically I have been having stomach problems for the last year. Eliminated certain foods and after some reading I think I have discovered wheat/gluten being the cause.

Anyways, I was confused on some things. So gluten is in wheat(protein) right? So anything that has wheat in it also has gluten in it unless it says on the food item. I'm assuming these company's just remove the protein and still have the wheat?

I seem to be affected by gluten and wheat, is this normal? Every internet site I found said only gluten and did not know if I should assume this includes wheat since gluten can be in other items without wheat correct?

So mainly,
1. Is it common to have a wheat intolerance shared with gluten?
2. If a product says gluten free, it can still contain wheat?
3. If a product is wheat free, it can still contain gluten?
4. Do cigarettes contain either? I read that they may and have stopped smoking, just wondering.

Can anyone list some good websites that have lists of foods that are wheat and gluten free.

thank you!

Gluten is ALWAYS in Wheat, Rye, and Barley. You can't have one without the other. If a product contains wheat then you need to automatically know that it also has gluten.

1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes (It could contain Rye, Barley or Oats, or any derivitive of those products, ie. Malt Flavoring)
4. Don't Know

Let me know if you have any more questions! Also if you think you have gluten intolerance / Celiac Disease you would want to get tested BEFORE going Gluten Free or else it can skew your test results.

Good luck!

Re: Im really confused on celiac/gluten/wheat, some help?

Okay, thank you very much. I have been on a gluten free diet for the past month and i already feel much better. I eliminated numerous things from my diet before this and this finally made some difference. Been to a specialist a dozen times, gotten colonoscopy and basic check up with no result. My doctor suggested it being a possibility so I tried it and it made a huge difference.

Mainly I was concerned that "gluten free" products still contained wheat, since I had heard they can remove the gluten from wheat but this would not help if you still had a wheat problem. Now I can eat gluten free only labeled items with ease.

thank you very much

No prob. There are some really good gluten free cookbooks out there by Bette Hagman, which really helped me when I was first diagnosed!
