Is h-pylori contagious?
My 79 year old Mom has h-pylori according to an endoscope test, she has been through one round of antibiotics (doc didn't want to retest her with endoscope after antiobiotic treatment, but we forced him to, it's a long story). The second endoscope showed she still is infected with it. She is being given another round of antibiotics.
My concern is almost every web-site I read about h-pylori says it's contagious by either kissing (even kissing a cat!), having sex. breathing in vomit spray from an infected person, etc. Mom has a boyfriend and I am concerned that if he is infected and giving it to her, it won't matter if she takes the antibiotics if he isn't medicated also(assuming he has it also, he needs to be tested), she will be constantly reinfected.
Anyway, Mom and her boyfriend consulted two doctors (not infectious disease doctors, a primary doc and a cardiologist) and both of them said h-pylori is NOT contagious, which is the opposite of what I am reading, so her boyfriend doesn't feel he needs to be tested. I feel even if it doesn't turn out to be contagious, her boyfriend should be tested because they eat in the same places and he could have picked it up in restaurant where they both ate, and he might need antibiotic treatment for his own health.
I have found many times that the doctors give out wrong information or bad advice, and I was wondering if anyone has been infected with h-pylori from a partner, or how I can prove to her boyfriend that h-pylori is contagious and he need to be tested for his own sake and my Mom's.
Thanks!
