Gastro Issues?

I am a 29 year old female. I have been having GI issues for about 4 weeks now. Started off with what felt like a terrible stomach ache. Doc gave me Somac antacid. However, the symptoms arent getting better. Everytime I eat, my stomach expands, and bloats, within 10-15 minutes. I have no appetite, though no nausea. Also start belching as soon as I eat anything. I also have abdominal pain, mostly around my navel, and at times, just above my pelvic bone. What is bothering though, is that I have lost about 4-5 kgs in the last 3 weeks and am fatigued easily. Though I am used to working out and kickboxing, now a 20 min walk does me in.

I have had a few tests and nothing seems to be really wrong. My blood test was fine, except slightly high level of lipase. (mine was 62 when normal is 2-60) Stool tests are fine with no Pylori or blood in them. I have also had abdominal and pelvic U/S and nothing seems apparently wrong.
The other thing I seem to have noticed is that my last period was very painful and erratic. Some days had heavy bleeding, and some days none. This month, it came about a week early (which never happens to me) and I had bleeding only for a day or so.

I am unsure what it is! Whether it is a gyno issue or a gastro. I will probably have an endoscopy soon, but was hoping to hear if anybody recognises these symptoms. Any help is much appreciated!!

Re: Gastro Issues?

Dear Historynerd

I came across your message because I too am belching alot and was surfing the web trying to find a solution. None forthcoming for me yet I'm afraid, although I do tend to suffer with diverticulitis so I think my problem may be due to that.

However, the reason I registered was so that I could reply as I noticed you are having 'odd' periods. I don't want to worry you but is there any chance you could be pregnant - even the slightest chance, even if you have a coil fitted?

The reason being the 'odd' period symptoms you describe, along with abdo pain and fatigue could just be due to an ectopic pregnancy. I had very similar symptoms a few years ago now, I had no idea I was pregnant or even could be pregnant but it turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy. I was very poorly indeed, so I felt compelled to write to you and say - please get yourself checked out immediately. Ectopic pregnancy's can easily be treated, if detected early enough, but can be fatal if they aren't.

There is The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust website which is very useful if you want further medical advice or friendly reassurance on one of their forums.

All the best.

Re: Gastro Issues?

Hi Lesley.

That is awfully sweet of you. Thanks for taking the effort of registering and writing back.

I havent been with anyone for more than a year now, so don't think, I can be pregnant. I do have an endoscopy and colonscopy scheduled for next week, so hopefully will find out something then. I checked with my GP and specialist if they think its a gastro thing or gyno, and they both seem to think its a gastro thing because my symptoms are very related to when i eat, and I am also lsoing a lot of weight quickly.

Thanks for watching out for me!

Re: Gastro Issues?

I hate to dash your hopes but scopes do not usually find an abdominal virus -- if you are not pregnant-- I think your GI bacteria is out of balance and needs to be rebalanced with friendly bacteria.

Bloating is usually caused by unfriendly bacteria strains-- your bloating is very quick.

And, 80% of air that is belched is swallowed.

The best thing I know to do for a GI problem like you describe is to take a probiotic -- reuteri --that is obtained from mothers milk and does in alot of bad intestinal bacteria.

I hope you can get it where you live.

God Bless---Harry

Re: Gastro Issues?

I'm relieved it is not an ectopic; I was worrying. I do hope you get sorted very quickly.

All the best

Lesley
