Medicare / closed period

As I understand it, once you have been on SSDI for at least 24 months then you will start getting Medicare.
I have been approved for a closed period case, I was approved for back back of 33 months which I of course still do not have and it is well past the 60 days since approval. (that is less the 5 month waiting period).
That would leave 8 months of eligible medicare period. Is this correct?
Because I have a closed period case, what happens to that 8 months of eligibility??

I was also told that I my kids are not eligible for ANY back pay.....
I just do not understand this system AT ALL.
