| Disability hearing for Ulcerative Colitis
I have been diagnosed with crohn's/colitis. I am 20 years old and live in Virginia. I go to the bathroom often and have bad abdominal pain that limits ny concentration, and gas that can clear out a room, that prevents me of working with others. I attended college and have statements from my instructor saying I had a hard time walking up stairs. I had my hearing the other day, and the hypothetical questions asked to the Vocational Expert limited me to two jobs he named where I don't lift, climb, nor work around other people. My lawyer questioned him and said is there a job out there that I can do with frequent bathroom breaks, and he said no. Is my case any good if anyone had previous experience?

20 is pretty young Michael but if your condition is such that is prevents you from working, then you can qualify for disability. It will be harder for you given your age IMO but still possible if your medical condition prevents you from doing any kind of SGA. I assume you are eligible for a child's benefits because of your age. IOW, the benefit will be paid on a parent's Social Security earnings record. Have you applied yet or just thinking about it?

I'm so sorry you have to live with Crohn"s/colitis, I know from working in the hospital how painful that can be and I have seen young people with it. It seems like it is occuring more in young people for whatever reason they have suport groups out there that will help you. I'm not sure about the disability part of it. But it seems like you have a pretty good shot but who knows you never know until it comes back Theere are a lot of people that have so many things wrong with them heart condititons and back problems and they get denied but then other get approved to me I have seen the painful side of Crohn's and it sometimes is controlled with diet but sometimes not. I know when they put someone in the hospital with it they control there diet. They have new meds comming out all the time with new research so maybe there is hope for you in the future but for now I think your doing the right thing because it is very time comsuming having to go to the bathroom containly. Have you gone to any support groups for your Crohn's? Hang in there all you can do is try and hope for the best. Good luck to you. please keep us posted again I' m sorry about your Crohn's and hope you get an approval.

If there is no job that you can do then I think you have a good chance winning. That sounds very painful , and i see how this can prevent a person from working. Hopefully you will be approved soon. The only way to get on a childs beneift is if one of your parents were disabled. Then you would be on your parents record and get money from that. If you have enough work credits you will be eligble for SSDI on your own if not then SSI.

Thanks, I hope so because unlike other conditions, this does affect young people just as much the older people. The main issue is staying occupant from bathroom breaks and concentrating due to abdominal pain, and age has no factor in that. I'm already on sick leave from my current job and I can't support myself during a flareup. And no, I have not been to any support groups.

OIC Michael, cool. How long did it take? You said you are only 20. It takes on average 2 years before you get to appear before tan ALJ. Did you apply when you were 18 or 19 years old? Did you have an attorney or non attorney rep?

I applied a couple days after I was 19, which was in Feb of 2010. It took like a year I think for a hearing date.for a hearing date. And yes, I have representation, now I'm just waiting for a decision.

You have been through the roughest part, now the wait time, and that can be very painful emotionally. I hope you hear something back soon and it is fully favorable.

UPDATE: The judge came to an unfavorable decision because two doctors they had look at my file said I could do light work, and my complaint of using the restroom a lot wasn't in my medical records. GAME OVER.

I'm kind of confused those two DR's were they your DR'S. i' think you can appeal that judges decision by submitting more evidence I know some other will help you also I don't think it has to be game over yet. Hang in there I'm sorry |

They weren't my doctors. My doctor did say that I was doing pretty good in my medical records despite me having to change my medicine again couple days ago. I know people who get disability for stupid uneccessary stuff but I can't when I really need it.
