    Disability and Weight Loss Surgery

I was approved for disability benefits the first time I applied about 3 yrs ago. Of course, losing weight would benefit many of the reasons I am disabled, but also many of the reasons I'm disabled makes it almost impossible to lose weight. Does anyone know if Disability Benefits covers weight loss surgery such as "The Lap Band" surgery? I have numerous friends that have had great success with this surgery and my Dr. approves of it saying that losing weight would benefit my back trouble, knee problems, as well as blood pressure and others effecting my health.

Not being able to work, I don't have the funds for such surgery and in no way consider it to be for "cosmetic reasons." Please let me know if there's any place to find this information or if anyone has had similar problems. Thanks!

Well it really depends on what health insurance you have. Are you talking about Medicare? If so, do you have one of the advantage plans?? I guess the best way to find out would be to call the customer service dept of your insurance carrier.

I have medicare and a supple. From what I've learned so far is that the insurance will pay for surgery, but will not pay for the "band" itself. The band is 5,000! Makes no sense to me and I'm not able to make payments (or don't want to) for the 5,000..
