Stairs and Floor make me fall or lose balance

Im 19 years old, and my vision isn't too bad. The power on my contacts for my right eye is -0.50 toric and my contacts for my left eye is sphere -2.50.

I noticed when I'm going up or down the stairs, the steps blend together and I often lose my balance. Mostly I fall when I go down the stairs because I think there is a step when there isn't actually or I will fall because I know there is no step but my body reacts like there is a step and I end up falling.

Another time I lose balance is when there are patterns or texture on the floor, especially if there is a pattern change. The carpet at the Children's hospital is full of colorful designs on the floor. I know the floor is flat and I see that it is flat, but somehow I end up losing balance. I was at the library, walking along the shelves and the color of the carpet switches from orange to tan. I know the floor is flat, but again my body thinks its a step and I end up falling. Ill also get very dizzy.

The same thing happens with cracks in the sidewalk, though it is not as much of a problem as the stairs or carpet.

Getting on and off elevators are also problem, but Im not sure if its related to this. I just get very dizzy, and I often have to sit on the floor or walk with my eyes closed while holding onto my dad.

I'm curious to see if anyone else knows why this is or if they know what is causing this. I would like to be able to walk down the stairs without having to hold onto the rail or having to feel with my foot to confirm a step.

Stairs and Floor make me fall or lose balance

Im a 19 year old female. My vision isn't too bad. My contact for my right eye is -2.50 sphere, and my contact for my left eye is -0.50 toric.

I noticed every time I go up and down the stairs, the steps blend together. This makes it difficult for me to go down the steps without losing balance or falling. Sometimes I think there is a step, but there isn't and I will fall or lose balance. Sometimes I know there is a step, but I hesitate to step down because I am not 100% confident. The edges of the steps can be taped or marked to indicate a step; however, they start to blend together and confuse me.

When there is a change in design, color, or texture of the floor, somehow my body reacts as if each change is a step even if I know the floor is flat. I can walk at a normal pace at first, but with every change, the designs on the floor can sometimes appear to be 3D if that makes sense. The Children's Hospital carpet is a good example of this, though i am not sure if all Children's hospital is the same design wise throughout America. I will lift my leg to avoid "hitting" something or I will hesitate to take a step when something appears to be lower.

I also noticed getting on and off elevators are difficult for me too. I will get extremely dizzy - to the point where I have to sit down in the elevator or sit down outside the elevator. Sometimes I will just close my eyes and walk to where I need to go while holding onto my dad because we cant wait 5 min for me to regain my balance.

Im not sure if I did a good job explaining what im going through. Why I am having such a hard time with stairs and floors? This started about 2 years ago, but wasn't that bad. Also why are my eye sights so different from each other?

    Hi DreamCity,

I don't recall public buildings having step-ups or uneven floors, so there's no need to worry about that. In that case you might be better off to just look straight head rather than looking down at the floor.

I go for walks every morning and I believe I do better, as far as balance goes, when I just look straight ahead.

Other than that, I would recommend eating a healthy diet and staying well hydrated. Dehydration can effect balance and promote dizziness.

Hi....have you seen an opthamologist to thoroughly check your eyes, an ENT to thoroughly check your ears and a neurologist to fully check if there is an issue of one or any having a connection related to your brain?

Have you had blood testing to see if you have any deficiencies or insight to something else. Physiotherapy might be of help.

This is a serious functioning condition that warrants more investigation.
    Please keep us updated.

I am thinking you may need a neurologist...an MRI of your eyes and brain might be in order here because you are not registering what you see. You may want to talk to your dad about scheduling a neuro check up.

I have optical neuritis, inflammation of the optic nerve. It comes from having MS- not suggesting you have MS- but when my optical nerve is inflammed, I see allot of the things you are describing. You can have Optical Neuritis and not have MS.

That large a difference from one eye to the other can cause vision issues. I'd see my eye doctor first and see what he/she thinks/feels they can do.
