new user, struggling with imbalance and vertigo

I'm a 25 year old male that has been struggling with vertigo and imbalance for the past 5 years. So far I haven't been given a clear cut diagnosis but recently it has been getting worst.

5 years ago I woke up and the room was spinning violently. Felt nauseous and threw up several times. Every time I moved my head slightly or even closed my eyes it would get worst. Was stuck in bed for the majority of the day. It died down later that evening
Next day it was gone until I started walking to class and everything felt tilted as if I was walking uphill. I remember sweating and fast heart beat at the time. It went away in a couple hours. Few months later the balance issue would come back for several days every few months so I decided to see an ENT.

The ENT suspected bppv. Did the epley maneuver and it didn't affect me or help me at all. He ordered a few tests including electronystagmogram, and a test where they put warm and cold water in my ear. The specialist told me she couldn't find anything and that I just have to hope it doesn't happen again. I am completely deaf in my right ear since birth but never had balance or diziness issues until now.

After receiving the results, my ENT told me to just come back if I have another episode. Surprisingly I didn't have another issue until about a year and a half later I was working and suddenly felt dizzy again with the room rotating and felt nauseous. My boss had me lie back and gave me fluids (he's an oral surgeon). Felt more calm and went home. The dizziness only lasted a few hours but I went to go see my ENT who tried the epley maneuver again to no success and referred me to a neuro ENT. The neuro ENT wants an MRI of my inner ear, my neck, and a fistula test in my ear. I decided to wait until I had an episode again to get this stuff done.

Well nothing happened until another year and a half later to today. 3 weeks ago, started getting spinning sensation again and a different boss had me on monitors. Blood pressure was 150/100 for several minutes. He had me go see a primary care dr the next day. blood pressure consistently normal at 110/70 -_- and bloodwork, ekg, urine all completely normal. Since that day though, ive been very off balance every few minutes every day. my brain will feel foggy, Ill feel pressure all over my head, it feels tingly on my forehead, and my whole body doesn't want to move when I feel off balance. No nausea this time though. This has been happening every day now and it's freaking me out. I'll feel normal and then suddenly for a few seconds feel severely off balance and it calms down back to normal again. What's funny is is that I can spin around, run, hang upside down, move my head in all directions quickly and not get any dizzy or imbalance episodes. It just happens out of nowhere. Sometimes slow breathing helps calm the vertigo, sometimes it doesn't.

Maybe going to get those tests done. Don't know if I should see any other type of doctor.

A neurotologist (same as neuro ENT) is a good doc for you. I would get that MRI sooner than later. Maneuvers have never helped me. Still searching for answers myself for the last 13 months.

Yes, as soon as I can get those MRIs I'll post back here. It just depressing that I can't get it done fast enough because I can never take off from work.

Just noticed we have similar names here

I have had 3 MRIs all leading to different diagnoses. Good luck with yours. Hope you get some answers soon.

Re: new user, struggling with imbalance and vertigo

I am ready all the posts of people who have the dizziness and imbalance. I am struggling with that lately as well. I too had all the tests done and was told everything was ok which gets very discouraging when you feel horrible every day. Someone told me to see an allergist and I did. I was tested and found out that I had allergies to many things, including pet dander, dust, mold, etc. Well I live in a very old house and have 2 dogs so there is no getting away from the dust and pet dander. Plus we use a fireplace insert and burn wood in the winter time. I started getting allergy shots every week and the dizziness completely went away!

Unfortunately, lately I'm back to where I started and feel that my allergy shots need to be adjusted now. I have an appointment today and am hopeful that once they adjust the shots, I will be back to normal again.

I just wanted to share with anyone out there suffering from the dizziness. Check with an allergist - I don't think you will regret it.

I have my MRIs scheduled in 10 days. Maybe I will see an allergist.. at this point I'm willing to try anything because I will be going to grad school this fall.. and I cannot imagine what having vertigo would do to me.

I did start taking magnesium supplements and I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but the dizziness that was going on everyday stopped. Haven't had an episode since I posted my story (when i started the magnesium), but sometimes I feel a bit off (head gets muggy, as if an episode is about to happen. We'll see. I'm not 100% convinced that magnesium is the answer.

I'll post results of MRIs as soon as I get them!

    Hi,
I have been suffering from vertigo on an off for the past 4yrs. As most of you mri, blood test ENT all normal. Its struck me again and I have hardly left the house in 3 months. I get fullness in my right ear so I did some google search and found that you can actually heal the pressure and vertigo using pressure points in the ear on the outer and back of ear. My ear was extremely tender and painful to the touch after massage but in a couple of days no tenderness or pain. Next I found a pressure point in my left ring finger 3rd pad bottom was very painful to pressure point so worked on that as well, dizzyness had calmed down but still there. Started doing facial pressure points and that's really cleared my foggy head, eyes and ears. Main points were bone on the outer eye young towards ear, top of forehead to brow, inner brow to outer brow. You will instantly find the point where there is a sharp pain work on that point gently it worked for me.

So if anyone is still reading this, got results from my MRIs. Neck came back unremarkable besides some very mild stenosis. My head resulted in 9mm cyst in the pineal fossa. Report says it's incidental and wants me to check on it next year with another MRI. Going to try and consult with a neurologist or neurosurgeon and get an opinion about it. I was skeptical about getting an ear fistula test but I think I'm going to get that done too just in case. I'll keep updating.

Re: new user, struggling with imbalance and vertigo

Last update in case anyone was following this. I saw a neuro ENT who diagnosed me with MAV, migraine associated vertigo. He did not find anything significant on the MRIs. He told me to follow a migraine diet and take vitamin b2, magnesium, and fish oil daily. I ended up buying something called Preventa Migraine which has riboflavin, magnesium, feverfew, and butter bur herbs. Have not had a single episode of vertigo since taking these supplements. A full bloodwork revealed that I was deficient in vitamin d, so I also have been taking vit d3 supplements. Lastly, I was told to exercise daily. So with the combination of everything, I have been feeling much better over the past few months. Not sure if it is too soon to tell.

I used to get painful headaches frequently but I never thought any of them were migraines. The doctor told me instead of getting migraine headaches, I get dizzy instead. I'm not 100% convinced with what he told me so far but the episodes seem to have stopped ever since I started taking his recommended supplements. If this keeps up long term, then I'll be one happy patient =)
