Post Behavior problems with Down Syndrome

I am a special. ed. teacher and I have a first grade girl with Down Syndrome. She does well in academic areas but we have problems with her running away from us, crawling under the table, and sometimes kicking or hitting other children. Can anyone give me some suggestions about how to handle these problems?

Does Indiana have Regional Centers? Some time of help for families with children with developmental disabilities?
My Amy has her own Social Worker - who, if I asked for it, would send a behavior specialist to my home OR to her school to find the best way to help Amy get along in the classroom environment.
My advice is to check with her parent. And to keep checking back here. A lot of good advice shows up on this message board.
For the record, one way I've found works with Amy better than anything is a Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy! voice when you want the child to do something. The Down's child......mine anyway, gets caught up in how happy and excited YOU sound and wants to join in.
    Hope this helps.

Does your school district have a committe on special ed? Does the student have a IEP? I would start there. Have a meeting with parents, other professionals and brain storm ideas of what will be done EVERYTIME she crawls under a table, hits another, make a behavior plan for her. Several that worked with my sister at that age when she would STOP AND DROP are, rewards (fruities, juice) one on one with someone she really lieks, play ground, then when she didn't comply you had something to take away. It has to be used EVERYTIME she acts out. May sound like a lot, does she have a 1:1 aide? classroom aide? Good luck have been there with my sister and my hubby is a special ed, admin.
