swallowing difficulties
for about 3 weeks now i have had problems with swallowing liquids and eating without getting choked. about a week into feeling this way, i spoke with my family physician about my difficulties swalllowing, she set up an appt for me to see an gastro specialist, well he suggested for me to have an endoscopy , in my upper GI ...said i had dysphagia so he dilated the esophagus areas that had narrowed. well it's been almost a week now since i had the dilation and my swallowing haven't improved, i am so frustrated and so thirsty .. i just want to get a glass of ice cold water and just drink it like i used to without hesitation, before this problem ever existed. my swallowing difficulties came on so sudden, one day i was eating and drinking fine and then all of a sudden i was getting strangled from drinking liquids and choking when i was eating a solid food. i am afraid to be home alone due to choking and this frustrates and depresses me. i've lost some weight in last few weeks due to me being afraid to eat or drink.. and also afraid of becoming dehydrated because i feel like i am not getting enough liquids down. i just don't know what to do, feel like my esophagus muscles just will not work when i want them i've forgotten how to swallow..chewing a stick of gum has become a task for me because when i have to swallow i get strangled.. have anyone dealt with this before and if so what did u do to improve this problem?

Re: swallowing difficulties
check to see if you have EE esinophilic esophogitus i have that badly and have to take steroids sprays, it causes narrowing and scar tissue / if they did the dilation correctly it should have helped. some drs dont know how to do it at all. you should not be in pain after having it done other than some soreness, no true pain though. you both may need to find different drs. sorry. i had to leave dr last year and find new one this year. had much better success this year with dilation and sprays etc. Last year that dr didnt find anything wrong and almost killed me, he did 2 dilations and finally tore my throat. so much pain and he did nothing just said i was fine.

Re: swallowing difficulties
Smithrenee, how r things for u now? I am going though the same thing only much worse. Takes me 1 1/2 hours to drink a up of tea. I have lost 20 lbs in like 2 1/2 months. I am petrified it's cancer. Last Friday was to have a scope done but I had a bad reaction to the meds and they couldn't preform the procedure. The GI doc now wants to meet with me before going further. I don't think he listns to how bad my swallowing is. The cookie swallow test showed a "filling defect" and the barium X-rays showed the same thin, possibly extrincit they said. It's been a nightmare :(
