I looked and found these medical studies of a little known issue called Superior Thyroid Cornu Syndrome. Most people haven't heard of it but it can be caused by neck trauma or a genetic abnormality that generally presents between 20 and 23 years of age. It causes the popping and clicking in the throat, the windpipe/thyroid/hyoid area, alone with pain, and a feeling of something stuck in your throat when turning, swallowing, or pushing on the area. It can be repaired with surgery.
