Afrin - how long can it take to work?

I've been trying to get to the bottom of a nose issue for over a year. My nose has been blocked, to some degree, 24/7 365. I've tried the nasal spray steroids, pills, nasal spray antihistamines, sinus rinses, etc. Nothing has worked, at all.

Simply as a test, my Dr and I decided to have me try Afrin for just a couple days. I've never taken it in my entire life. I'm aware that it is not a long term solution; this was simply a test to see if we could get anything to work.

I had read all these stories of Afrin clearing people up instantly. So, when I tried it a few days back, and nothing changed, I immediately assumed it was yet another drug that didn't work. Nevertheless, I kept taking it, as directed, for 3 days. Suddenly, right after the 3rd evening dosage, my nose finally opened more than it probably has in a year. As you can imagine, I was shocked. Full deep breaths. And, most importantly, a CLUE to a diagnosis.

Ok, to my question: does Afrin only affect the tissue that it comes in contact with? In other words, is it possible it would take that long to completely open up my inflamed sinuses, as the medication slowly works it way around the structures in my nose?

Re: Afrin - how long can it take to work?

That's a very good question. Years ago I was a smoker and was allergic, and developed many, many polyps in my nose and couldn't smell or breathe much at all from my nose. However, whenever I used something like Afrin, I DID get immediate relief.
Have you ever had a sinus scan? It just takes five minutes and would probably be super helpful to determined what's going on in your nose. Feel better!!

Hi. By "Sinus Scan", are you referring to a nasal endoscopy? If so, yes. If you are referring to a CT scan, no.

Re: Afrin - how long can it take to work?

Endoscopy showed moderate inflammation, most specifically of the turbinates.

Doctor sees no reason to do a CT. I pushed him on this, and he said he wouldn't do it himself, as he doesn't think we would gain anything. I wonder if he would think differently if HE hadn't been able to breath for over a year, and doesn't have a firm diagnosis?

EXACTLY! He's not suffering so what does he care. If I were you I would seek a second opinion. I'm glad you got some relief from the Afrin but if you use it often enough you will end up getting rebound congestion and then end up addicted to the stuff. I know I have been!
