Post-Tonsillectomy Mucus

I'm on Day 4 of my tonsillectomy recovery (I'm 18) and honestly the pain hasn't been too bad. My biggest problem is this random chest congestion/phlegm that I keep getting. My body wants to cough it up, however my doctor strongly advised against coughing/blowing my nose/clearing my throat. I don't know how to get the stuff out before my body goes on autopilot and makes me cough it up which basically results in me panicking and choking. I'll also wake up in the middle of the night choking on it. My doctor said to just continue eating frozen stuff like popsicles, slushes, etc., but it's not really helping. Does anyone have any suggestions? This mucus is making my recovery terrible and I'm spending every other second of my life worrying about choking to death. Does anyone have any suggestions to help get rid of this stuff?
