Phlegm/Choking PND, lump in throat need serious input

This is gonna be pretty long story so sorry.

Since about 4-5 years ago I've been having problems with my upper nasal area, where the nose meets the throat. Sometime's it feels like there's huge clumps of mucus stuck in the passage and wont move, causing me to gag and etc, even cause panic in some cases because it feels "stuck". I have to snort a lot and after a few years it's gotten so bad it has ruined my quality of life. On top of that I have sensations in my throat where it feels like it's swollen or mucus is stuck there most of the time, food and drinks might move it , but it will come back. A lot of these symptoms also cause anxiety. Now don't get me wrong.. I do have anxiety problems, but they are triggered by the physical symptoms, when it's absent, my anxiety is very low and I generally feel normal.

There's been a few times where this has gotten so bad that it felt like I was going to choke, and I've been to the ER many times over this problem and it's written off as anxiety. I've been to specialist this year for the first time and he said he found no abnormalities when he checked my ears and throat which made me feel worse. I'm trying to get a scope if possible. The only things that really help are tea, steam and nyquil, If I feel like I'm choking and there's panic I will use ativan to help stop it, but it does not get rid of my symptoms. I've also tried using omeprazole to see if it was an acid reflux issue, which the specialist recommended but it has not helped me. I'm currently out of work due to this chronic problem and it's sucked the life out of me and made me very depressed because I don't want to live with it for the rest of my life. I could deal if it didn't cause anxiety attacks twice a year. It may seem like a small thing but it's ruined my life and I don't know how to fix it. The whole feeling of something hanging down from my nasopharynx causes this problem to go out of control. Some weeks it isn't even there, then it comes back and starts up again.

what could be causing this? is it just really bad post nasal drip or something else? ive heard that anxiety could cause PND but not PND cause anxiety. there's a lot more but ill leave all of this here for now. I'm having this problem as I type but I don't feel anxiety, just frustrated and annoyed. The only ideas I have are adenoid inflammation or something else. I guess I wont really find out until I get a scope in my throat.

I tried gasping for air but felt like airway was obstructed. I breathed in through my nose and felt like a vapor lock suddenly popped open. I blamed event on dehydration & started diligently drinking electrolyte water. Unfortunately, there is more to the problem. My throat now feels like I have PND all the time and can feel like I am drowning in mucous. My episodes of feeling like I can't breathe/swallow have persisted. Tonight I could not swallow a baked potato as it was too mushy and couldn't push through whatever?! It does feel like there is something stuck, or that something has become inflamed since the the first time. I have only been experiencing this for about a month. I have been searching the Internet, as this has been super scary! Anyone would feel anxiety over not being able to breathe or swallow. That is normal! I hope that we both find out what is going on.

ive been expiencing this for a long time and its been messing with my life, I can barely focus on things and makes keeping jobs difficult and gives me episodes where I huff and try to clear mucus violently causes my anxiety and stress levels to rise so i feel like i might have an attack. when it passes , usually in the nighttime i feel ok and relaxed somewhat. Im just so confused how this problem could evolve into something like this, and why no matter what i try the pnd wont go away along with my other throat problems.

Re: Phlegm/Choking PND, lump in throat need serious input

In reading about your dilemma of PND, and writing my recollection of events, I thought about how I felt a "pop" and then I could breathe. I had had sinus pressure and also pressure in my right ear. Last night I used some Nasacort in just the R nostril that was totally plugged (pushed on left nostril, and could not get air up right side). Did the same to right nostril and air flowed easily up the left nostril. Realized that I primarily sleep on my right side, so last night I slept on my left side. My right sinus can now get some air up it, but still pretty plugged compared to the left. I have had tinnitus recently so I figured if I can equalize the pressure in my ears and sinuses, hopefully it can be chalked up to a eustachian tube problem. Some 30 years ago I had 2 sinus surgeries done as I had a deviated septum and maxillary sinuses were completely full of cysts, polyps and staph. Hopefully that is not the case now!

Re: Phlegm/Choking PND, lump in throat need serious input

im not really sure what corrects it to be honest besides eating some food or drink a little bit... it usually comes and goes. I know it's related to PND but the thing that puzzled me for a long time is why my body reacts to it this way? I've had PND in the past and it didn't make me react like this.. maybe over time my throat has become too sensitive and manifest anxiety from it? fear of choking maybe or something like that.. I really can't understand it
