Blocked ears for a year getting worse

Hi I'm hoping someone out there can help me or if anyone is going through something similar

I have had blocked ears for a year. They crackle, pop, squelch, i feel like the blood is pumping in my ears/heartbeat, I get this feeling as if the hose of a vacuum has suddenly become blocked and the air just disappears, then it goes even quieter and then the sound of what I can only describe as a flat lining sound comes which kind of knocks me a bit, I don't get dizzy or faint it just plays with my balance a bit. I also get painless vibrations in both ears at different times that I can feel and hear.

They feel itchy deep down inside too, and it's like I'm underwater or on a plane never able to get my ears to fully pop. I've noticed it can get worse when driving my car.

I have been to doctors numerous times, I was prescribed (at different times) nasal congestants, steroid nasal sprays, sudafed, antihistamines, and most of the time told it would go away in a few weeks, it's been a year now.

I paid to see a private ENT as the waiting list is long on the NHS. He diagnosed me with ETD and said I had fluid in left ear but none in right (right is the worst ear and the one it originally started in), tested my hearing and it wasn't great but wasn't terrible. He told me to keep doing valsalva manoeuvre and use the otovent as well as the steam, did this for several weeks, no change. Went back and he said pressure was now fine and no sign of fluid...yet it was worse, he then looked further into my history and then said I have a combination of TMJ/TMD (I had this once several years ago which gave me a sore jaw for couple weeks then went away) and my migraines as well (which got worse after this started not before), so there would be no point doing anything like grommets for ETD as ETD wasn't the only issue, it was a combination of the three now... I'm now on beta blockers and a use a mouth guard... nothing has changed and it's gotten worse.

I have been on waiting list for 5 months now to see an ENT on the NHS, I can't see me even getting an appointment this year and this has been going on since summer 2016. I'm at my wits end. I really struggle to hear at times, everything becomes so muffled and and I end up hearing the bloody pounding more than anything.

I've watched videos on other things to try, I've researched lots of things to do and try, done it all. Bought an ear popper as well... nothing. I've changed my lifestyle, eating better, no junk, exercise, even losing weight and still nothing.

Thanks for any help
Kylie

Re: Blocked ears for a year getting worse

Hi Kylie, I don't have any answers as I'm here for probably the same reasons, looking for some help with my ETD (self diagnosed) because both my ears have been feeling full and clogged, oftentimes aching on the right, and always popping loudly on the left since October 2016 after a cold and flight. There are beating/fluttering sounds as well. I can clear my throat and spit out clear or green mucus often (sorry tmi) and have seen many different health care providers, including an ENT a few times, most recently about 2 months ago who said he didn't see anything wrong really and that I should just try nasal rinse and a steroid nasal spray. It didn't work. I've also tried antibiotics from him in the past as well last year with limited success. He suggested prednisone next but I am weary of drugs in general and want to avoid any type of surgery.

Anyway, I too am at my wits end. I feel as if my head is wrapped in a bubble and that my hearing is gradually declining. Here are some things I've tried that sadly has not really helped much:

1. Garlic apple cider vinegar
2. Garlic/mullein ear oil (helps soothes the earaches sometimes)
3. Helichrysum italcum essential oil behind ears
4. Sinus Clear capsule
5. Sinus tablets
6. Ibuprofen
7. Steroid nasal spray
8. Salt water gargle (helps heal my irritated throat better...connected to Eustachian tube?)
9. Eustachi ear popper (does help pop but it is temporary) and EarDoc
10. Mint/ menthol lozenges
11. Dandelion and turner ginger tea
12. Kombucha drink
13. Vitamin and supplements
14. Ricura homeopathic medicine for sinus
15. Chinese herbal remedy
16. Sniffing Olbas oil

And seeing various health care providers, including upper cervical chiropractors (two of whom most probably did more damage than help).

I should mentioned that I had a neck injury coupled with a concussion last year and all my issues started cropping up afterwards, eyes first, followed by sinus and ears and neck pain, hence the chiropractors (which I wish I never saw in the first place). My jaw was knocked out of alignment under one of them too but knocked back in one of the visits and I fled chiropractic since then. At the current time, I am seeing a specialized and experienced PT who does gentle manual manipulation in addition to an osteopath. Really hoping, wishing, praying that there will be some form of breakthrough for me, a miracle if you will. I don't know if my neck is the source, or was the source of my ear issues and that I need to fix my neck first or see someone separate for ears again.

If ever you find any effective treatment, please post your story for hope! Wishing you lots of luck!!!

Re: Blocked ears for a year getting worse

Hi!

It's very frustrating not knowing what to do. I've tried most of the things on your list, I feel at a complete loss. Even getting stressed makes the pressure worse, can't seem to do anything these days that it doesn't affect! I'm on the cancellation list now for an ENT in the hopes I can even get a scan or just something to say exactly what it is.

Please keep me updated on how you get on, I do hope you get answers too as it's a horrible thing to go through!

Kylie

Re: Blocked ears for a year getting worse

I've had ETD in both ears for 9 mos. I have the clogging, crackling, popping and pulling with vibrations.
I have been to numerous specialists and what they have decided is that I have allergies (I don't have allergy symptoms other than my ears but a scope up my nose shows a lot of inflammation that is due to allergies). I also have TMJ and the TMJ is caused by super tight muscles due to stress/anxiety.

I use Azelastine nasal spray, flonase nasal spray and zyrtec. It helps a little. What really helped was singulair but I had a reaction and had to stop taking it. I am also doing allergy shots (3 shots twice per week). I go to physical therapy for the TMJ and tight muscles and I wear a bite splint at night. My doctor gave me Clonazepam to help with the stress/anxiety to loosen the muscles. It does help.

This has been the most miserable year of my life.

Re: Blocked ears for a year getting worse

Hi, I'm just offering my 2 cents worth, not much, and I haven't experienced all that you guys have, but all these cavities, nasal, sinus, ear canals are all connected one way or another.
What seemed to really help me was to stop drinking milk, creamer, any dairy and stay away from gluten which causes yeast build up. (Itchy inner ear syndrome)
I used white vinegar in my ears, just a couple drops, to take care of any bacterial infection and that helped the itching.
When I stopped drinking milk, I noticed a lessening of pressure in my ears and my sinuses. I don't know if this will help you all or not, but could be worth a try if your miserable!

Re: Blocked ears for a year getting worse

I had a drastic diet change earlier this year. I gave up caffeine, sugar, dairy, wheat and eggs after being diagnosed with food allergies and a candida infection. My sinus drainage cleared up quite a bit. At least it no longer feels like worms crawling around inside my face! My ears only improved a little. My heartburn did go away completely.
It didn't fix me but it helped.

Re: Blocked ears for a year getting worse

Yes, it takes a long time to get rid of all the mucus that causes a lot of these symptoms. The mucus accumulates, and then if you have a deviated septum or ear pressure, it just makes everything 10 x worse.
You may feel better and better as time goes on.
