Question Persistent ear pressure, occasional pain, not sure of the cause

    Hi all,

This is actually my first post to this site. I thought I would give it a try, since it will be nearly a month and a half until I can see a specialist for a chronic ear issue I've been dealing with for almost a year now. Some background: In 2015 while attending college and after a couple of consecutive severe sinus infections, I began experiencing plugged ears. Over the course of the next month, this feeling progressed into a feeling of painful pressure in and below my ears. It eventually cleared. The next year, the ear pressure came back a bit, but much milder and again lasted only a month. In Spring 2017, however, the issue came back with a vengeance. My ears were in excruciating pain and discomfort - a feeling that would go away for a period of a couple weeks, then come back. In the summer, the pain and pressure peaked. It subsided a bit in the fall. This year it has almost been non-existent, but as of today, the pressure is back, along with a flushed feeling in my face at the end of the day and a reddened right ear. No pain anymore, luckily. I have been to an ENT back in August, who saw nothing abnormal in my sinus CT scan and nasal endoscopy, while at the same time noting that my nasal passages were severely swollen. She referred me to an allergist who diagnosed me with a dust mite allergy and recommended allergy shots. I finally thought I had my answer and began receiving my shots. When I received private insurance through my job (previously I only had Medicaid insurance), I saw a different allergist for a second opinion, who retested me and said I have no allergies (?) I am now waiting until early March to see a Stanford ear specialist. In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? What could cause an intermittent feeling of ear pressure, barring allergies? I do notice that the ear pressure gets worse under stress. Could it be related? Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to give a lot of background. Thanks in advance for reading.

As a follow up, I saw the ear specialist last week. She did a very thorough exam and nasal endoscopy. In her opinion my septum in both nostrils was significantly deviated. She also noted narrow Eustachian tubes through the nasal entrances, which did not open upon vocalizing. She is considering a diagnosis of Meniere's disease, except that I have no dizziness or vertigo, and no tinnitus. However, to rule it out, I am on a low sodium diet for a month. If the ear issue clears, she will be convinced that I have Meniere's. So far, it hasn't cleared and is worse than ever.
