How should I get my hearing tested?

I belong to an HMO and as far as I know, my doctor doesn't do a hearing test. So far I have had only one test from a place that sells hearing aids and that was about 10 years ago. I think I remember that they put head phones on me. Yesterday I went to a different company and they said they would need to put something in my ear to test my hearing. What they showed me looked like rather large plugs.

Since I had some bleeding from getting my ears cleaned at my doctors office, I need to wait for my ear to heal before going back. It's been 10 days and they said to give it another week. But now I'm having second thoughts about having something rather large put into my ears. Is that the usual practice for a hearing test? I'm thinking of calling them on Monday and cancelling my appointment.

Any thoughts on the best way to get a hearing test?

I would discuss this with your ENT; give them a call and ask for the doctor to call you back. This may not be a good time to get tested if you are just healing from a problem anyway; putting it off another week until you can speak to your ENT is not a bad idea.
