Go to an ENT that will remove with a metal tool. The home methods mostly melt the wax onto your eardrum causing more issues.

I have gone to a doctor if there was pain. Otherwise, the kit from the drugstore was fine. They're all the same.

since I have had serious wax buildup problems and have gone through numerous different ways by different people I will tell you the best that I have experienced: My nurse warms water(not hot) and puts it in my ear for a short period of time to soften the wax in my ear. Then she flushes the ear out with a water pressure device(like a squirt gun). That usually does the trick. The problem is if they go in your ear with a hard device and scratch the inside of your ear you can get an ear infection.

I go every 6months to the ENT and have it removed with a crochet hook looking instrument. The water method is not a good option for women with hair past their ears! You need to take a blowdryer with you!

While taking a hot or warm shower, tilt your head to the side and stand under the water. Collect some water in your ear and move away from the water while keeping your head tilted. Move your jaw in way like you are dramatically chewing something and then pour the water out of your ear by slowly tilting you head back to normal. Repeat 3 or 4 times per ear, two or 3 times a week and you'll see a dramatic improvement. Hope this helps.

The best method is whatever your ENT does... do not try this at home especially if you have never had it done professionally, you can really mess up your ear drum.
