Question Sensation and hoarseness on one side of throat

    Hi All,

For a week now, Iíve had a ďheavyĒ sensation on the right side of my throat coupled with a hoarse voice. I am coughing occasionally, but the cough isnít too bad. Also doing a bit of throat-clearing. No fever, no visible or perceivable lumps, although the sensation feels like there should be a lump. I wouldnít call it painful, but instead simply like something is lodged on the right side of my voice box. Itís quite noticeable and distracting. This started about a week after getting over a respiratory virus that involved lots of coughing.

I went to an ENT the other day and she looked at my throat for about ten seconds and said it seemed red on both sides, not only one side, then she gave a script for antibiotics and sent me on my way. It seemed dismissive, and antibiotics donít seem appropriate given the cursory examination.

Since Iíve never experienced anything like this condition and the sensation is disturbingly strange, I read about it. Piecing together information from various sources, including some medical research, it seems likely I have laryngitis, which, if it continues another week or two (it has shown no improvement over the past week) would be regarded as ďchronic,Ē with about a 2 or 3 percent probability of some form of throat cancer. The thing thatís worrying me is that itís only on one side and it doesnít seem to get better at all, even after doing the recommended things: resting my voice, avoiding alcohol, drinking lots of water, etc.

Iím probabLy worrying too much, but given I used to smoke (although I quit 20 years ago), Iím troubled by the condition. Any information, shared experience, or suggestions would be appreciated, itís a creepy feeling.

Sammy, listen to your doctor. You are not a medical professional and what you read on the net is not always correct. If your doctor suggested you might have the remains of an infection and prescribed you antibiotics- take them. You'll feel better.

Don't play doctor and do not rely on the net to give you medical advice. I hope you feel better soon!
