Smile Adult tonsillectomy - Important Info

Hi, my names Jay. I知 26, very fit and healthy and live in England, UK. I had a tonsillectomy 10 days ago and I知 going to get straight to the point in order to help those people understand what to expect and how to heal effectively.

1. After the operation you will feel ok. You will have blood in your mouth which you値l spit out, no problems. Obviously you will have sore throat but the pain won稚 be severe you will be able to drink water and possibly tiny bits of food.
2. The first 3 to 4 days are ok. The pain will be moderate and you will be able to eat small bits of food, but make sure you drink lots of water. The scabs will not have formed at this point. Take your painkillers regular and eat brown bread and cereal, like cornflakes or all bran. The painkillers may make you constipated but with the lack of food you probably won稚 need to go anyway.
3. Days 4-8 are the worst. The white scab has now formed and swallowing is very painful. My hospital didn稚 give me enough painkillers so I ran out on day 4 make sure this doesn稚 happen to you. Visit your doctor and ask for more. On day five my doctor gave me antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and co-codemol all three working together. You need these every 4 hours in order to be able to swallow food.
4. Expect some bleeding, but any more than 2 teaspoonfuls seek medical advice straight away.
5. Expect earache. This can be moderate to severe but will be eased greatly with co-codemol tablets.
6. Don稚 bother eating ice-cream. This is given to kids as they heal much quicker than adults. You will find it makes your throat sorer and leaves a coating on your throat which will feel slimy not something you want on your scab. Try and eat, if you can, carrots, bread, cereal, crackers and drink plenty of water. The slightly crunchier food will help the scab heal quicker by removing the crap that builds up on the outer layer. I know this sounds horrible, but trust me it works.
7. I知 expecting to be normal again in approx 14 days.

If you are an adult having a tonsillectomy please do not underestimate the increase in pain and discomfort that will occur 4-8 days AFTER the operation. The first 3-4 days will put you into a false sense of security as the pain is only moderate so be prepared and get the correct tablets from the doctor. My doctor was shocked the hospital did not give me antibiotics to fight potential infection and enough painkillers. Note also your tongue and mouth will be swollen. For this you need anti-inflammatory drugs, which work perfectly well along with the co-codemol painkillers.

Good luck.
