Went Shooting. Now Dealing with Tinnitus. Need Help/Advice

    Hi all,
I already posted this in the general forum, but got not responses. Here is my story. Last Sunday (8/6) my friend and I went shooting and even though I was wearing ear plugs, I immideately noticed that something was wrong.

I was hearing pretty loud, constant ringing in my left ear and lost most of my hearing from it. The symptoms did not improve by Thursday (08/10) and I went to see a doctor. She told me that my Estachian (sp?) Tubes got 'closed' and it is 'easily curable'.

She told me to take a breath, close my mouth, hold my nose closed with my hand and 'exhale'. She said the pressure created will 'clear' the Tubes. I noticed that my hearing improved dramatically, I'd say by 50%, but the ringing is still persistant and loud.

Has anyone encounterd something like this before? People on some Gun-related forums say that the condition is irreversable. From your experience, what should I expect and what kind of treatment helps if any?

Thank you very much in advance!

    Hi, Gold:

All I can tell you is my experience with tinnitus. I had a cold and developed it in my left ear. It came on very suddenly. I had a CAT scan because they thought it might be caused by some kind of tumor. No tumor found. I was just resigned to the fact (and was told by an ENT specialist) that it would probably never go away! I did some research and found that niacin was used to help. I started taking it (then you have to decide on the right type of niacin...slow dissolving, fast, etc.,), and it really did help. The only thing was when I stopped taking it, and I can't exactly remember now why I had to stop, the tinnitus came back.

So, one day, just as mysteriously and suddenly as it came, it went away! This was about 6 years ago and I was just talking to a friend about all this weird stuff we get in our old age!

Hopefully, either the niacin will help you or it will mysteriously disappear like mine did!

Thanks for your response! It's been 1.5 weeks now and even though my hearing improved dramatically, the ringing is still loud and clear and my head feels like it's about to explose.

I started taking Exedrine, just to ease the head-ache. It helps for an hour or so. Pretty miserable. Will try niacin. Hope it does the trick. How long do you have to take it for?

It started to work immediately but the minute I stopped taking it, the ringing would come back. You'll have to see if it even helps you. I probably wound up taking it for a month or so. It was so many years ago, it's hard to remember! Good luck.
