Unhappy Severe sore throat on one side?

Hi all I am sure this is a routine question, but I have never had a sore throat quite like this. Over the course of the day at work (desk work and teching at a veterinary hospital) my throast became increasingly tight and sore and it came to the point where it gave me a serious headache as well. I do have allergies, but am on shots and have not experienced anything this painful from allergies in awhile. Anyway, it is only on the right side of my throat and it feels as if the airway is closing up, making it very difficult to breathe normally and especially swallow. The nasal passage on the same side is also blocked up. Normally if I am having an allergic reaction, my entire throat will swell and become sore. I am wondering if this sounds like something that deserves prompt medical attention. A part of me wonders if it will spread to both sides and then cause serious airway trouble.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Re: Severe sore throat on one side?

I had a severe unilateral sore throat for about a month before it was finally diagnosed as a peritonsillar abcess. I ended up in the ER b/c my throat started to close up and I couldn't breathe (the abcess was only on one side, so you get the picture of how swollen it was). And the swelling didn't come about until after a month of the pain, which by the way, was unlike any sore throat I'd ever had. About a 9.5 on the 10 pain scale. So, yes, you need to see a doctor right away. The infection can spread into the chest cavity and end up being very serious.
