    question about bumps in throat

I have seasonal allergies but they aren't bad. Every spring/fall I usually just get alot of post nasal drip, some weeks ill get the bad eye itch, sneezing and runny nose. But - I always seem to get a sore throat that lasts for like 4 -6 weeks or itll lead into a sinus infection around this time.

Just recently I had the sore throat again, my glands right under my jaw were sore for about 4 or 5 weeks, hurt when I swallowed. Recently I've discovered red bumps on the back of my throat (behind the uvula on the back wall part) and I believe at the base of by tounge too. I went to an ENT and he said it was normal, it happens when the tissue is disturbed or something.

Since then (2 - 3 weeks ago now) the sore throat has gone away pretty much. Whats bothering me is - I still have these bumps every now and then (they get larger and sometimes go totally away) and just recently (5 days ago) something under the right side of my jaw has enlarged and I can feel it whenever I swallow like there is something stuck there. If I put my hand where my submandibular gland should be, it feels like there is a hard bump there. I keep freaking myself out with cancer but I'm sure its very unlikely as I'm only 19, I don't smoke, do not drink very often, not overweight at all, and fairly healthy. My family also doesn't have a lot of history with cancer. I read about salivary gland stones.. could this be a possibility?

I SING, and I take it very seriously. This gets REALLLLY annoying - has anyone had any of these symptoms... something they can tell me?!

you don't know how much I'd appreciate it.

Re: question about bumps in throat

    Mathieu jofis,

My family chronic sinus and allergy sufferers, we also have what the ENT and GP has described as an irritant/allergic stimulated mouth reaction. These "ulcers" come and go with allergic stimuli and the consumption of acidic foods. I doubt you have cancer... given your profile, but you can always voice your concerns to your MD.

Keep your mind open when these spots occur:
    1) Are your allergies active?
    2) What have you ate or drank recently?

Allergies change as you age, when was the last time you were tested? It may be you have developed a new one.

    Respectfully Yours,
    MG

Re: question about bumps in throat

Thanks for the input MG, although, I'm not too worried about the small bumps. I've seen these come and go as my post nasal drip flow increases and decreases. It seems as though these are definitley associated with my allergies.

My main concern is the bigger bump right below my jaw that I can feel everytime I swallow. I'm not sure if its a lymph node, something in my salivary gland or a bump thats actually in the throat or on the tounge. I mean honestly I dont know why I'd get such a thing with just some post nasal drip and no other symptoms at all. It's just there and annoying.

Re: question about bumps in throat

Lymph nodes react to irritants... thus irritation can cause them to flare up. If it is allergy dependent then the increase in PND is a result an increased need to fight an irritant. This irritant could cause a lymph node to become active. Some of our lymph nodes are more sensitive than most the ones under the jaw... associated with your tonsils are the most active, because they serve as the first line of defense against inhaled offenders. Best of luck.

Re: question about bumps in throat

Id really feel it inside my throat when I swallowed if it was a lymph node enlargment? Its almost like a scratchy feeling sometimes, a lump thats stuck on the end of my tounge that wont go down.
