    Whats behind the throat wall?

Hi - I've got a daughter who apparently pierced her throat the other night with a bamboo skewer (from the kitchen). I was in bed but her Dad says she had it in her mouth then leaned over somehow and it got jammed into her throat. I looked at it and there was a little hole there, but it healed in a day or two so I did not take her to the emergency room.

Should I have taken her to the emergency room, and what are the complications from an injury like this? It was just a tiny hole but if it introduced bacteria behind the wall of her throat, and then the throat healed, wouldn't that be a problem? She has a fever now and I don't know how much to worry, it could just be the flu, etc., but what if its related to that injury?

I pierced the back of my throat with a chopstick when I was little and it healed right away as well, so she should be fine
