Re: when tonsillectomy scabs fall off

Try not to listen to people who say to textured eat foods that aid in helping you take the scabs off. I've seen that written on these boards many times.

Although it's different for everyone, mine began coming off prematurely around Day 6 because I attempted to eat a really soft chocolate chip cookie's center. What a horrible idea!! Not only did it strip off much of my scabs, but exposed the blood clots behind them. I tried to go back to the soup-only diet I had been on which left me sick from all the hydrocodone syrup I was taking. However, my body had other plans and on Day 8 I had four small hemorrages from the clots that stopped after a few minutes with ice.

However, my body began to rebel against the soup-painkiller diet and I began to vomit on Day 7. More scabs came off, and I didn't know where from, because my throat was all pink and spotted with big red clots in the tonsil area. I felt that something was not quite right that evening and I still went to sleep.

I woke up from a phone alarm I had set accidentally to myself. I realized at that moment that something terribly wrong was happening: I was bleeding into my stomach and choking on my blood. I ran to the bathroom and ice water and attempted to stop the bleeding. It would slow down, but as soon as I swallowed it would begin again. After waiting about 40 minutes I had to rush to the emergency room where I waited another 40 minutes to get in. By this time it finally stopped.

In the emergency room, I explained what had happened to the doctor. We did not end up recauterizing the vessels, but the reason it was so difficult to clot was that the area bleeding was directly in the center behind my tongue. I spent the next four hours vomitting up clots from my stomach the size of kidneys and livers. It was the most horrifying experience physically and emotionally. I had already had a HORRIBLE and PAINFUL recovery. And All of Day 8 I felt horrendous. My throat was killing me from all the stomach acid and muscle contractions. I tried to eat some mashed potatoes to no BURNED. That night I barely felt comfortable sleeping because I kept thinking I might not wake up to know if I bled.

I decided to go back to the narcotic painkiller before bed, drank around 6 glasses of water, and slept. I must have been severely dehydrated because I did not urinate even after another four glasses of water.

My advice:

drink lots of water even though it's very painful at first. It really does get easier. I choose room temperature, but even low sodium soups or carnation instant breakfast, soy milks, etc.

Don't try to get the scabs off! By Day 9 a MIRACLE happened and my scabs reformed over the blood clots. I was even able for the first time ever to eat Thanksgiving mashed potatoes and some other soft things without hemorrage or extreme pain.

The scabs look whittish

When they come off it might look like the white is just thinning, because as of today Day 11, my scabs are thinning and I can see more of the pink tissue behind it.

However if you get the scabs off prematurely, you might have a blood clot behind it...and BEWARE!

Re: when tonsillectomy scabs fall off

My scabs seem to be just fading so Im guessing that they are just disolving?
I had been getting sick too and its truely dreadful!
I hope you have a more comfortable recovery. The only thing ill say is that it has been a very stingy painful process though.
