Weird throat symptoms for 4 months. What could this be?

Hi all,

I have been experiencing some odd symptoms in my throat since the beginning of March. It started one day when I came back from aqua therapy. I noticed a kind of lump or mucus slide down my throat when I swallowed, kind of the same feeling just before you get a cold. The next morning I woke up with a sore throat. My throat was swollen and red and bumpy but not discolored as in white bumps. I then got a mild cough which didn't last very long but I was severely tired for days. I went to the doctor and he thought it was a throat infection. He put me on antibiotics for 10 days. My symptoms remained (swollen, red, bumpy throat) and the doctor then thought it could be a sinus infection and put me on another round of different antibiotics for 5 more days. Well it still didn't go away and I developed swollen lymph nodes on the right side of my neck which lasted almost 2 months. My doctor then referred me to an ENT specialist who first thought it could be acid reflux and put me on medication. When that didn't help he took a throat culture, a sinus scan and blood tests but all tests were negative except I had a positive-negative mono test which apparently just means I have had mono before in my life. The doctors are baffled and I am still sick. Does anyone have any ideas or have had similar symptoms? Thanks!

Hi Alliecat:

Sorry you are experiencing so much discomfort. Might you have a viral infection such as herpes? I know people can develop infections and sore throats from allergies. Even without knowing the exact cause, sucking on DGL tablets might help soothe your throat. A little bit of honey or aloe vera juice here and there may also help.

Hope you feel better soon.

Rose

Hi, Rose.
Thank you for replying. As I understand, I was tested for mono or what is called Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) which is a member of the herpes family. However they tested me almost 3 months after I first complained of my symptoms which is too late (from what I read) to detect an active infection. I did though get a positive-negative result on my mono blood test but as my doctor explained, it just means that I've had it at some point before but it is not currently active. I could have had it when I was 13 or 20 or a year ago etc. It is very frustrating when the doctor is baffled but I will take some of your suggestions in the meantime and see if some of the symptoms I have can be soothed until someone can figure out what is wrong with me.
Thanks again for your response. :)
