Swaying and Imbalance

I developed a sensitive (mild ethmoid & maxillary Sinusitis) nose since 2002 after a trip to Australia in cold weather. There is always a thin layer of dangling white sticky snort in my inner Right nose, after hot meals/hot shower over the head/weather change. In 2006 I went to China for holiday and for 2 weeks in Nov I had a very bad flu, running nose with lots of green mucus running out of the nose. In January 2007, I felt a feeling on a spot on the top Right side of my head. The next day I got up, I felt my head very heavy with pressure and I felt like a drunk person swaying about plus heaviness weighing down from back of head area between 2 ears and at times top of head pass by both inner ears, both cheeks of face, jaws to neck & body. Inner ears feel tight & full with a gentle pressure, especially more intense in the Right inner ear. At the same time I feel & hear gentle beating of my heart & nerves around my ears. Muscles back of my neck are always very tense & tight. June 2008 an ENT doctor said my right Eustachian tube in the ear was blocked & after taking some drugs intensively for 6 weeks, it was unblocked. Sept 2008, 3 Thornwaldt cysts were removed by endoscopic operation from my nose and the pressure in my head became less.

I always have a sore sensation in my Right inner ear, when I talk too much or talk on the phone or swallow hard or when I get emotional. Lately this sore feeling is quite frequent. When I sit/stand upright, I always feel a strong tight pressure pushing towards both inner ears, the same pressure weighing heavily down on my cheeks/jaws and on to my body.

I always feel a strong heavy force that is always pushing me to the back or to the front or to the sides. When I sit upright spine straight, I feel the same force pushing me back towards the chair/sofa back (during watch TV, type emails, eating daily meals) When I bend down to pick up a thing from a table located below my waist, I feel this same force pulling me down to the table. Swaying plus heaviness become worse when I stand upright with spine straight, feet apart or sit upright spine straight, even for a second, followed by gentle beating of my heart. Any exerting of strength or stretching of limbs will aggravate my condition. Since Jan 2007 my condition is gradually getting worse with any simple physical activity. The only exercise I can do daily is just to walk slowly and I use a tongkat, which lessens a little bit the impact of the heaviness/swaying. If walking without a tongkat, I feel as if I am like an Orang Utan thumping my feet shifting my heavy weight from right to left and left to right, plus having the discomfort of heaviness and swaying.

For 3 years I have seen ENT specialists and Neurologists and I have done many MRI scans of the brain, results normal. MRI of Thorasic spine normal. MRI Lumbar spine says small postero-central midsagittal disc herniation with degeneration at L5/S1. MRI Cervical Spine says from C4/5 to C6/7 there are posterior osteodiscal protrusions/bulges present. Left uncovertebral osteophyte at C5/6 is seen. There is no neural foramen narrowing present. Ligamentum flavum thickening at C5/6 and C6/7 is seen resulting in effacement of the posterior CSF space. MRI neck says minimal cervical spondylosis at C4/C5 and C5/C6. My blood pressure and Thyroid profile normal.

One ENT Specialist suspected that 1 of the 3 little bones that controls balance in my Right ear is damaged, another Neurologist suspected a flu virus has damaged a tiny brain nerve. A Spine Specialist suspected that the bulges in my Cervical Spine could be part of the problem too. Daily I take 1 CoEnzymeQ10, 1 Tebonin (Gingko Biloba) 2 Mecobalamin, (B12), 2 Neurobion (B1,B6,B12) and 2 Fish Oil (1000mg each), 1 Zocor 10mg (to control cholesterol) .Strangely, I notice when I lie down, all my heaviness on my head, my swaying slowly diminish and I feel most comfortable lying down. (especially when sleeping) Why?? Why when my spine is vertical I feel the discomfort but when my spine is horizontal I feel better?

Re: Swaying and Imbalance

not sure about the bones and the balance thing,I have had balance issues for 12 years ,I got the elpy done removing particles from both ears after a head injury,The doctor states there are balance and tilt censors on your inner ear and particles taping them could cause balance and vision probs,,,,,,my balance is feeling better after he put particles back,,,good luck,,,
