How long after my tonsillectomy until I can sing again?

The last week of August I contracted a rare throat infection that normally takes one week to heal on its own. However, it didnt and I got progressively more sick until I ended up in the hospital for a week with several secondary infections including tonsillitis. I was on antibiotics for three weeks total to cure all infections, and an ENT came in and removed my tonsils because the infections caused abscesses to form that had to be removed as well. I still have my adenoids.

Heres the problem: Im a professional singer and have been my entire life. Im currently enrolled in a performing arts college in New York City. I was home in California for the summer but am set to return to Ny this coming Saturday. However, since the surgery, I have not been able to sing AT ALL. I lack control over my voice and constantly go flat and sharp, its entirely nasal, very shaky, and all around sounds awful. The ENT that did the surgery promised that it would not affect my voice whatsoever and I could return to school just fine, however this is clearly not the case.

My question is how long until things return to normal? I fear Im going to have to take this semester off from school due to the fact that singling is involved in nearly all of my classes and if I cant do it I will be asked to leave. I really dont want that to happen. Will things magically return to normal by this coming weekend? Or am I just screwed? The surgery was on September 22nd, so its been nearly three weeks.

Re: How long after my tonsillectomy until I can sing again?

I realize it has been a while, but I wonder how you recovered from tonsil surgery as a vocalist? I'm doing some reading to understand what my daughter may have to go through by the end of this semester. She is a vocalist on scholarship and had her 2nd bout of strep with extremely swollen tonsils last month. She is going to a follow-up ENT appointment this Tuesday to tell her what her options may be. I suspect since her tonsils are still very swollen more than a month after treatment that he will recommend that her tonsils (and Adnoids?) need to come out. If you're still reading this forum I am interested to hear your outcome. Thanks.
