Question Asymmetrical Tonsils - Had Removal awaiting results

About Me: 21 Years Old, Male, Average weight, Ex-smoker & no other health problems.

    Hello

For a few months now I have had asymmetrical tonsils (my right tonsil was considerably larger than my left) - after many visits to my GP because the large tonsil was making me nauseous they assured me that it was nothing.

A few weeks ago I had a check-up with my ENT doctor because I have T-tubes in both ears, when the check-up was done on my ears I asked the doctor to quickly take a look at my tonsil, instantly he told me that he would like to get to tonsils out to get them tested. He said it's a precaution.

I had the tonsils removed at the start of this week and I am now at home recovering, I have to wait for a letter in 10-days with the test results, chances are it will all be normal. I just want to know because I am nervously awaiting, If anyone else has experienced this and what your results were? Also if any health professionals are reading what possible results could come back?

I of course don't expect the big C because I am so young, although I am an ex-smoker for 5 years so do understand that it could have something to do with smoking.

I had asymmetrical tonsils. My ENT said cancer was highly unlikely because I'm not a smoker. We decided to take them out because of a family history of various unrelated kinds of cancer. I just wanted peace of mind. I didn't have tonsil cancer. (Whew!) The right tonsil was ten times bigger than the left one.

Thanks for your reply choirgirl - that's great.

Was your tonsil always larger than the other, mine has ballooned in size over the past 5 months which is why the ENT specialist wanted to take them both out to get tested.

Did the test real anything at all as to why one was bigger than the other? In my opinion for mine to grow as much as it has in 5 months something must have caused that, but maybe I'm wrong.

    Thanks

Re: Asymmetrical Tonsils - Had Removal awaiting results

Both of my tonsils were twice the size of a normal person's tonsils according to my ENT, but on top of that my right tonsil definitely appeared much larger than my left one. I'm just 9 days post op on my tonsillectomy, so I can't really comment on what the results are for mine, either. But, I imagine it could just be that your larger tonsil was cryptic while the other was not. I know that I had large tonsil stones coming out of my right tonsil very consistently while the other tonsil had very few (at least that I ever saw). So I'm guessing the explanation could be as simple as that. It will be interesting to hear what you find out!

No, my right tonsil wasn't always larger. For most of my life, they were both perfectly normal. The right one had been larger for at least three years. It had those stinky things in it, but I didn't have sore throats.

The tests showed that the right one was full of bacteria and sulfur crystals, which are caused by bacteria.

Re: Asymmetrical Tonsils - Had Removal awaiting results

My post-op appointment isn't until March 1st, so I doubt I'll find out anything until then. For some reason, my doctor likes to see adult patients 3 weeks after the surgery instead of 2. But, it will be interesting to see what is going on with all of our tonsils. Let us know what you find out about yours, too.
