HELP! Possible Tonsil Stones...

So I have what I believe is a tonsil stone. I only have one and it's a large sac looking thing that looks like its filled with pus. It's probably about the size of my pinky fingernail and it's attached to one of my tonsils. My throat hurts and it's also difficult to swallow. I don't have health insurance so going to my doctor isn't an option unless it's something really urgent.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of it at home? Is this even a tonsil stone? I didn't know if there were any other possible explanations for it. Any kind of answers/advice would be really helpful. Thanks!

Re: HELP! Possible Tonsil Stones...

Sounds like a tonsil stone alright.
I've read about those.
Are you sure it's not a pus-filled blister, though? Is it hard?

I believe I read that some people push them out with their fingers, or with a spoon or some other instrument. You might even be able to grasp it with tweezers and pull it out.

Ideally, I mean, you should go to the doctor and have it removed, but if for some reason that isn't feasible, I have read that many people simply remove them at home.
Some people say that when a tonsil stone is ready to come out, it will come out when they sneeze! Or when they swallow bread.

I'll bet if you just keep working at it, it'll come out eventually.

Good luck.

Re: HELP! Possible Tonsil Stones...

Thanks, I'm pretty sure it's a tonsil stone. I just didn't really know what to do about it. I can't really tell if it's hard or not. I don't know how I'm going to get it off. The thought of going in there with tweezers D: My gag reflex is pretty strong and I'd probably end up stabbing myself. Yeah, going to the doctor is out unless it's serious/life-threatening as I have no insurance and it would cost me a ridiculous amount of money. Maybe it'll just fall off on it's own? That's what I'm hoping for right now I guess...

Re: HELP! Possible Tonsil Stones...

I think they do fall out on their own eventually.
I've never had one, but I have a morbid habit of reading all the medical stuff I can find on the internet, and I've definitely read about them. They're common.
If I recall correctly, your tonsils have these pocks in them, little indentations called "crypts", and tonsil stones can form in them. Tonsil stones are made out of trapped food particles that get lodged in there, and bacteria.
Apparently one of the side effects is that they can make your breath really bad.
But yeah, they're harmless, and I've read dozens of posts about them on medical websites and forums. Many people dislodge them just by pushing at their tonsils with their fingers.
If you've got a strong gag reflex, though, you might not want to try it.
Then again, if you throw up, maybe that'll dislodge the stone, lol.

Best of luck with it.

Re: HELP! Possible Tonsil Stones...

Tonsil stones will generally come out on their own eventually, but I always removed mine because they were so uncomfortable. If you can push on your tonsil just below the stone without gagging your self and then push up on it, that will sometimes help to dislodge them as does drinking a lot of fluids. I have to admit, though, that I would often remove mine with a toothpick because they came out easier that way. Some people use water pics to remove them, as well. And, once it's loose, sometimes a little coughing will help them come up.

But. . . all that said, tonsil stones can be quite uncomfortable, but they don't usually cause pain per se. That and the the fact that it looks like a pus bag makes me wonder if you actually have an infection. Plus, a tonsil stone the size of your pinky nail is quite large - especially if it is your first one. Do you have bad breath with it? I would suggest that if it doesn't dislodge either on it's own or with your help in the next few days that you make a doctor visit. And particularly if you start to run a fever, you should see a doctor. Hopefully it's not necessary (I totally understand the finance issues), but I would do it if it's not better soon.
