Submandibular Swelling & Tenderness (Unusual and Long Lasting)

Looking for some help as to what I could have?

A month ago I started having post nasal drip that when I cleared my throat I felt a discomfort on the right side of my throat and pressure on the right side of my head. I also started to notice swelling under my jaw. This all started Aug 25th.

I waited a week and nothing got better so I saw my doc you thought I had a bacterial infection and prescribed Augmentin 875 10 Days. Like everyone else I felt horrible taking this medication with nauseousness and drowsiness. On day 2 I had a fever that lasted 2 hours and went away. There were 3 nights within the 10 day that I had night sweats of just my head.

Day 9 I started feeling good, day 10 I saw the doc who said I should be good going forward. Blood work was done at this follow up appointment and all came back normal. There was still some swelling under my Jaw and some tenderness but my doc wasn't concerned.

That following Monday I went back to my Doc because the swelling and tenderness had intensified. He felt around and didn't think a lymph node was swollen but instead a Saliva Gland. So I was refereed to an ENT.

Saw the ENT on Monday October 17th who felt in my mouth and jaw and believed my Submandibular Gland was infected and put me back on Augmentin for 14 days 875mg. Monday October 22nd I saw him again because none of my symptoms had gotten better but appeared to have gotten worse (Swelling and Tenderness). He had the scope down my nose an in my throat and didn't see anything. He didn't feel a tumor and doesn't believe this is more than an infection either way he wanted me to get an MRI. I asked about stones, he didn't see anything, I have no puss drainage, my mouth is not dry.

On Wednesday Oct 24th I had an MRI with Contrast and have a follow up with him on Monday Oct 29th to review results.

WHAT DO I HAVE? IS this familiar to anyone?
Swelling comes and goes, tenderness comes and goes, does not seem to be any correlation with eating. Tenderness is under right side of Jaw and sometimes down neck. Swelling is under right side of Jaw, mid way between chin and back of jaw (Angular part where jaw goes vertical)

Swelling is more of puffiness than any lump or enlargement. I cant feel any specific lumps that would signify a swollen lymph node, then again I don't know what I'm feeling other than a large tissue which seems to be my Submandibular saliva gland.

There is a specific spot just under my jaw forward from the angular part that connects to my head that on occasion I can touch it and there is pain. Other times I poke around and can't find it and no pain.

I am getting chills throughout the day and night, I'm lethargic, I haven't been eating well as there are times I'm nauseous and just not in the mood.

I had two nights of head sweats this past week on Wednesday and Thursday that woke me up and prevented me from going back to sleep, No fever. Last night I slept for 8 hours no problem, no sweating. I feel that my sweats come on about 2 hours into sleeping and are primarily on my forehead. The second night of sweats I got up and felt immediately nauseous, drank water, and as soon as I put my head down, my forehead starting sweating. This stopped after about 5 min and then I didn't have any more sweats, granted I wasn't able to fall back asleep.

I still have post nasal drip that seems to irritate my throat. This seems to go be less when I take allergy medication but doesn't go away completely. I have been taking allergy meds the last 2 days. Mucus is clear/ white and started same time as swelling.

I feel that my lymph nodes on the right side of my groan seem kind of tender / sore within the last couple days. I can not find any lump or enlargement around my ears, neck, back of head, or shoulders, Again I'm no DR. but pushing, rubbing, touching, etc... I don't feel anything of concern.

The right side of my neck feels ache at times which I brought to the ENT's attention on Monday who believes to be muscular and no concern. Although when gland is swollen thats when my neck bothers me, same side.

Saliva is usually thick and white/ clear mucus. At times can be watery but rarely.

No fever except when I had a brief fever 3 weeks ago, otherwise my body temp has been between 98.6 and 97.7

I have 4 days left of the Augmentin and this has been going on for a month with no longterm signs of improvement and days where its worse than others. I need to get better soon because its effecting my work and home life.

Obviously I keep thinking the worse and I am just looking for someone who has a similar story who can provide some mental relief.

    Thank you

One thing I hate is when someone has health issues, posts on boards like this, ask for help and never post a follow up as to what the DX was... Here is where we are at.

I reviewed the MRI with the ENT specialist who said everything was normal, Lymph nodes were normal, Submandibular Saliva gland normal, there is no reason for them to believe I have a tumor or cancer. GREAT NEWS!!!!

This appointment took place on Monday 29th and I was starting feel a little bit better (65%). Hearing this news provided mental relief. I was prescribed Augmentin 875 for another 10 days which totals 34 days of being on the Antibiotic.

As I write this one week since I met with the ENT I can say that I am 95% back to normal with minor annoyances which I credit to the Augmentin and not to my illness.

The ENT believes I had a nasty infection that although caused unusual symptoms he believes the worst is behind me. I agree as I haven't felt this good in over 2 months.

I hope this provides good information for others as I have not been able to find any information regarding my symptoms and obviously thought the worst.
