Question Intestinal Endometriosis-Know anything??

I started doing a little research on intestinal endometriosis... I guess the symptoms are sometime identical to IBS and many women are misdiagnosed as having IBS when in fact it's intestinal endometriosis....
Does anyone know anything about the condition or have any experience with it???

Hi, dmbfan,

Do you think you may have the intestinal endometriosis? I have no knowledge of it other than, I believe tissue from the endometrius separates & gets lodged in other places & causes bleeding & pain.
Have you seen a gynecologist?

I do not know if I have it...but I'm nervous that I might. The symptoms fit...it seems to make more sense than all the other conditions I've been reading up on. I have an appt. to see an ob/gyn in April...I'll wait it out till then. It makes me really nervous because if it is the problem, then I've had it for at LEAST 5 years now..maybe longer...I wonder what that means for my possiblity of having kids (I'm 28 and my husband and I have recently decided to begin trying)

From what I've read, you are correct, the cells that grow in the uterus begin growing outside the uterus and on different organs. The intestinal variety can effect the bowels and intestines. The symptoms are very much like IBS, changes in BMs, D and/or C and/or both, gas, bloating, unexplained pelvic pain and cramping etc. Of course all of these symptoms tend to get worse around one's menstrual cylcle-yet are not limited to that time.

There's alot of symptoms of it that are similar to a lot of different problems...so I'm not going to worry too much....not yet anyway.
Thanks for the reply

Hi,
I just went to http://www.endometriosis.co.uk/ to learn more. It is pretty hard to diagnose, the symptoms are pretty much the same. I think you are wise not to worry too much about it, wait for your appt. I wish you all the best with this.

HI.

I actually at one point did alot of research on this, b/c I too thought I may have it. I was trying to find SOME cause of my symptoms, thinking maybe something else fit better than IBS. I saw my Gyno several times about it. He said that though it may be a possibility, there are several factors (red flags) they sort of look for in Endometriosis that can distunguish it from a GI problem.

-Pain does not really wax and wane as much as IBS
- Pain tends to get worse around/ before period
- Pain during sex (This is the biggie, because that is often times NOT a symptom of a GI problem)
-heavy or irregular periods (again, Not a symptom of IBS)

The problem with endometriosis is, there is NO test for it. (We've all been down that route before with IBS). UGH.

Endometriosis does not show up on Xray or unltrasound. (sometimes they can see some misplaced tissue on an ultrasound, but that can be difficult if it is other places). The only way to diagnose it is through and invasive procedure called a laparascopy . This is done scope out any tissue that is present outside of the uterus. They go in through the belly button with a laparscope and remove the tissue with a laser.

The location of this external uterine tissue vary. Endometriosis can spread to the following areas:

- Fallopian tubes
- Ovaries
- Throughout the vaginal walls
- Cervix
- Rectum
- Intestines
- Bladder

Here are some more detailed (more specific) symptoms of Endometriosis:

"There is an increase of cramping associated with menstrual function, which gives clues that something else is going on inside. There may be lower back pain, or even painful intercourse associated with endometriosis. The symptoms vary person to person, since the location varies for each individual. The symptoms the researchers know of so far go as follows:

- Intense menstrual cramping
- Lower back pain before and during menses
- Spotting on and off days before period is due
- Diarrhea just before or during period
- Blood present in the stool
- Blood present in the urine
- Unusual bloating, abdominal puffiness or swelling

Unfortunately, even after extensive surgery, there is no cure for endometriosis. It feeds on the hormones produced by our bodies to continue normal monthly functions, and will only disappear during or after menopause."

Hope some of this helps someone!!

Dmbfan, I think I remember us having some similar symptoms, so if you want to chat let me know. I am in the same boat as you are.

Love u all!

I used to wonder about this too. I read once that hormones can affect IBS, make it worse, so it can seem like endometriosis.

My biggest problem was when my period started. Horrible cramps. Not so much sharp pains, gas pains, stuff like that that I'm used to. They were in weird places, like I could tell they were in some unusual spot in my intestines. It made me nervous to be able to feel that part of me. I had to "go" all the time on day one, a little on day two. I'd just clean out. I was popping pain pills like candy. The Pill helped. I stopped it a couple months ago (haven't gotten around to going to the doctor, plus I have to switch doctors now anyway) and was worried all that suffering would come back, but it hasn't. Not a whole lot. And Aleve really helps, as long as I take it before my period starts, not after.

Anyway... sex hurts for me; my relationship with my boyfriend has been a real pain, so to speak, because of it. I've never had a good experience, with him or anyone else. I'm terrified of it, too.

But my period isn't heavy, although it lasts 7 days, and I don't have spotting, so I probably just have more than one problem at once (oh, great) instead of just one.

My OBGYN is suspicious that I have this. I have a swollen pouch-type area on the left of my umbilicus or belly button. I have terrible IBS with constipation alternating with bouts of diarrhea with horrid cramps and spasms. I will go 14 days without a bowel movement, and this could have something to do with the tissue attaching itself onto the bowel. I have almost constant lower abdominal pain and have to use a heating pad most of the time. I will bloat terribly, to the point where I cannot wear pants because I can't get them buttoned. It's just so aggravating. My doctor wants to do the laparoscopy, but I've not agreed to it due to the fact that I can't take pain medicine, so I'm basically afraid to have it done.

Hope everything goes well for you...
Meg

I've had a total hysterectomy. I had, Adenomyosis,
Endometriosis, A Uterine Fibroid Tumor, Cystic Ovaries
and dense stage 4 adhesions glueing my colon to the pelvic musculature and wrapped aroind the ovary.

I have had 3 surgeries in less than a year.
one was an emergency surgery for my colon function shutting down. It happens when the colon gets trapped by adhesions.

Don't go a long time with out making sure you have a bowel movement. 14 days can turn into a life threatening emergency. I had my surgery on less.

A laproscope is the only way to get a correct diagnosis.
Adhesions and the trouble they cause usually won't be seen on standard imaging.
I've had them all except for an MRI.
Take care and don't let your conditions linger.
You will be well quicker the sooner these problems are addressed.
Take care and be well,
kat

P.S. my third surgery was done by the reproductive endocrinologist and my most definitive answers on the metabolic endocrine problems that cause these nightmares were finally found there too.
And yes, there are real answers. good answers.
But you need the proper medical care.
