Rice cakes... the work of the devil?

I've heard mixed things about rice cakes. Some say they are OK, some say you might as well eat those corn-starch packing pellets in terms on nutritional value.

Anyway, I bought some to munch on with my post-workout shake, thinking they might be a decent source of high-GI / low-GI carbs without a lot of calories. Here's the nutrition info:

40 calories per serving (5 mini cakes), 6g carb, 1g protein, 0g fat.

Ingredients are whole grain brown rice, corn (germ removed), sugar, natural flavors, caramel color, salt.

Nothing too bad in there from what I can tell (except the corn, but you really can't get away from corn in some form or another in most pre-packed "convenience" foods)... so if I consume two servings along with my protein shake (240cal, 8g carb, 44g protein, 4g fat) am I right in the range of where I want to be for the post-workout "meal"?

Hey Philly - rice cakes are too high on the GI for my liking, especially with a weight loss goal. It really has to be an individual choice, based on how you respond to carbs and what your overal goal is. Track it, see how you respond. With your heavy cardio and training for a race, I think this would be fine for you.

so are you guys saying rice cakes aren't good for a diet? I starting to watch my weight so I bought a whole pack of rice cakes, and I just eat them throughout the day at work, then when i get home I have a good dinner...

Probably not the best for your goals and how you use them. Rice cakes are very high on the glycemic Index. Which means they convert very fast to a sugar inside your body. When you have an influx of sugar in your blood your bodies reaction is to "dump" insulin to shuttle this to the muscle cells. The body tends to over react with the amount of insulin it produces and leaves you with an overabundance of insulin. This starts the reaction of hunger and sugar cravings, quite vicious cycle.

I have a different view on them, but then I'm thin to begin with. I find they are good for keeping me from eating things that are far worse. As long as you stick to a single serving and include them in your calorie count, you shouldn't gain any weight on them.

Now, if you really want to know what an "evil ricecake" really is.......Sometimes I sneak a little Nutella (haszelnut chocolate spread) on plain rice cakes. Low-fat flavored cream cheese is probably a better choice than the Nutella.

    Thanks for the responses.

I was more looking at them ONLY when paired with a protein shake as a post-workout "meal." I was working from my understanding that if you were going to have a high GI food, immediately after a workout was the best time to have it. I seem to remember Naxis saying ice cream or even white sugar were things that you could include in the post-workout nutrient "mix."

Wouldn't the high GI release of insulin also help carry the protein to those muscles? Isn't that why a lot of the pre-packaged "post workout" drinks have some kind of "ose" (dextrose, glucose, sucrose) content?

    Philly - and Mags

Yes- I would give you a full green light to eat them, as aplied to your training and goals. The thing I hate (not like Philly he phrased it correctly) is when a person asks me "are peanuts good to eat?" or " should I eat broccoli?" There are sooooo many factors - what shape are you in? is the rest of your meal cheese dogs? Is your goal to be a powerlifter or a miss fitness USA? Are you 2% body fat or 34%. And finally can you even stand the taste of broccoli!

So Mags is correct. Some people can use them and use them quite well. Hey, some people worship the Devil!

    <<"Are peanuts good to eat?">>

Eating peanuts can lead to becoming the President.

    <<"Should I eat broccoli?">>

Not eating broccoli can lead to becoming the President.

<<Is the rest of your meal cheese dogs?>>

    Most Presidents are cheese dogs.

    <<Is your goal to be a powerlifter...>>

Being a powerlifter can lead to becoming Governor (and maybe President).

    <<Or miss fitness USA?>>

That's MY ultimate goal... not to become Governor or President.

<<Hey, some people worship the Devil!>>

Which includes most Governors, Presidents, and politicians.

I think I'll stick to rice cakes after all.
