Confused about aerobic versus anaerobic conditioning?

Confused about aerobic versus anaerobic conditioning?

Hi,
Do you know how it's well known that weight lifting is considered "anaerobic?" Well, what if I was doing exercises like lunges first, then bicep curls in an orderly fashion, and by the way, doing these two hand in hand REALLY breaks up a sweat. How can doing strength training(double muscle groups alternatively in the same exercise) be considered "anaerobic" when my heart rate is just as high as when I'm doing cardio? I've always been confused about this, cause to me, strength training like squats with biceps, or lunges WITH biceps seems to be a cardio or "aerobic" kind of conditioning. Does anyone know how to explain to me the difference. It seems like some strength training does use oxygen. Sorry if this sounds dumb.

Heart rate doesn't have anything to do with whether an exercise is aerobic or anaerobic. That just means that in order to perform the exercise the body is using oxygen to supply energy or not. When you lift weights, it is short bursts of intense muscular contraction, and to execute that movement, your body is not using oxygen for it's energy. When you are running, it is more of an endurance exercise and is more reliant on oxygen to keep a constant supply of nutrients to the muscles. Most of the time, even at rest, you are in the 'aerobic pathway'.

Thanks guys, now it makes more sense. I just figured cardio(or aerobic) exercise was referring to the heart so, never mind, now I got it thanks!
