Question Too Much Cardio?

Hi everyone. I just got a new treadmill- A Smooth Fitness 9.15. I LOVE It. It is SO comfortable to walk /run on. I am currently doing 60 min 5 days a week on average. I am trying to lose just 3-5 pounds that I gained this month Sometimes I do 60 min powerwalking in the A.M. ( I can't run do to an injured knee) and 30 min in the P.M. IS there such a thing as doing too much cardio?

Re: Too Much Cardio?

Absolutely. If you're doing a whole lot of cardio and not eating *enough* to compensate, you might be burning a lot of muscle which will actually slow your metabolism and cause your body to hold onto fat. However, if you're staying at a low intensity like powerwalking, an hour and a half isnt really too much once in a while, but i'd try to keep it to an hour just to be safe.

And, are you doing any weight training? Cause it's a great metaboism booster, and with proper protein and stuff, you won't loose muscle!

I used to be pretty heavy into weight training- I was in the Army and Navy and had very physical jobs so staying in shape for me was a must. I actually gain muscle very quickly. Now that I am a stay-at-home-mom, I don't feel the need to stay so muscley. I am happy with the muscle I have and feel that hauling groceries and 20-30 pound kids everywhere is enough to maintain. I still do push-ups, tricep dips and crunches. I am more concerned with burning the fat off to see the muscle underneath!
