Post just starting

I am taking the step to waiting to start to jog/run again, but I know I have to take it easy because of lung problems-how long should I go the first time? How long should I streach; any other suggestions?

Go only as far as you feel comfortable going. No one can tell you how long to go because one you know what you can do, so do what you can. Stretch before and after, holding each pose 15-30 seconds.

I have a book from Runners, and you should stretch first!

Then for beginners, start with walking - get into a routine....then run 2 minutes, walk 4 minutes and so on...gradually add 1-2 minutes to the run and walk....

Don't forget to keep a log for yourself - with distance, time, course, notes on how you felt etc.. maybe also buy a heart rate watch and pedameter.

You'll get there and don't forget to stretch.

I am starting this also. I quit smoking in January - so it should be a challenge as well. But, a good one!

You should always do some sort of warm up excercise for at least 10 minutes, then do some stretching, stretching should last you a good 10 minutes as well. With running people may say "run as long as you are comfortable" but that is not true in most cases. When running you may feel uncomfortable, but keep on going because you're body will watch its second wind, and you'll feel better and run farther. Also eat lots of carbs if you want to run longer distances than 30 miles a week

Hi Tav77,

I too am beginning my fitness regime and I have recently given up smoking. I am wondering how you are going. I am very interested in increasing my fitness levels as well as loosing 15kg (Aussie!). I have a heart rate monitor and I find that i reach my training rate very quickly. Do you know your resting heart rate and how do you feel when you excercise. Hope the lungs heal really fast!!! How often are you excercising?
