Good pilates dvd?

Can anyone offer any advice on a good Pilates dvd to try out? Right now I have two by Denise Austin and they're a little too easy for me now. I would prefer one that's a bit more advanced!

I have tried Windsor pilates and would say it's about as easy as Denise Austin's, so definitely a little more challenging than that one too!

I really want to start doing Pilates more often because I notice how good it's been for clearing my mind and improving my anxiety, as well as getting my abs flat again after hernia surgery!

Re: Good pilates dvd?

I always get them from the library...lots of different variety. If you find one you like you can always buy it...good luck!!

Re: Good pilates dvd?

That's a good idea! Unfortunately when I last looked, they didn't have too good a variety here but maybe a different library would be better.

I bought Jillian Michaels' yoga dvd, although not pilates... I thought maybe it would be a good one that I would enjoy. I did like that it was more challenging than some other yoga dvd's... I wish she made a pilates one! I do like pilates more than yoga

Re: Good pilates dvd?

I hope you get some answers too. I used to live in a town where I took pilates. My instructor kicked our booties! Planks for days and I never left there without being exhausted. I've tried a few DVDs and they are all too easy. I would love to find something REALLY challenging!

Re: Good pilates dvd?

<edited> Pilates should not be easy..you just need to modify the exercise making it harder or easier. <edited>..good luck !

Re: Good pilates dvd?

Well, I think it's more of an issue of being easy because I've been doing the same routine and need some change. I already do all of the moves modified to be more difficult (denise shows how to make the moves easier and then the more challenging ways). I just need a new routine!

I definitely find that some moves are more challenging than others, but I think everyone is like that... we are all better at some poses than others! I also just am used to things like vigorous running, where I'll be sweating quite a lot, so I want to make sure I'm not taking it too easy with other workouts.

Re: Good pilates dvd?

Conditioning Pilates isn't supposed to make you sweat like running. If your core muscles are getting stronger, you're doing it right.

You can always pause the DVD to repeat an exercise again, or hold the pose longer. Also, have you tried changing the leg positions to make it harder? This week I found that the Hundred is totally evil if you scissor you legs up and down (straight knees) while you're doing it.

Re: Good pilates dvd?

Great idea! I do find scissors to be one of the more difficult moves in Pilates! I actually DO modify any that work the lower abs quite a bit, because I'm having a lot of trouble with this area right now, ever since I had hernia surgery back in November. I will get back to it soon I hope!
