Tips for a new runner

Lightbulb Tips for a new runner

I've recently discovered the "Couch to 5k" running plan and I've decided to do it. I've always thought of running as something people did when they wanted to punish themselves but after reading through articles and such I've decided to give it a serious try.

So I'm following the plan which is a 3 day per week workout/running plan and I've signed up for a 5k race that will take place at the end of August.

I'm just wondering if anyone out there has any tips for someone just starting out with running.

Anything helps!

Please don't punish yourself My advice is to RUN SLOW, especially at the beginning of your training plan. I see, far too often, runners start off their runs too dang fast and then after 5 minutes it starts to "hurt." Consequently, interest is lost and discomfort is associated with running. Get used to running and really run slower than you know you can. For instance, hold yourself back. If you think, man I can go faster, don't. Just keep the entire run comfortable for the entire duration you are out there.

Later on, in subsequent weeks, yes, you'll have to push a few runs to get fit enough to enjoy a 5k. But early on, no point.
