Back Problem While Running

Back Problem While Running

When I start running I am fine, but as I get up to 2-3 miles I get this tight spasm feeling in the the lower right back. As I keep running it starts to pain slightly, but it's not major. Then my lower right back/ hip area starts to feel like it is rising up and arching in. Then It starts to feel as if my right leg is shorter than my left, and it feels so awkward to run. This has been going on for over a month. So when this happens I try to straighten my posture or maybe hunch over a little so my hip won't rise upward, but it doesn't help.  I have to stop even though I'm not tired. Is my back out of alignment? Is it a muscle sprain or spasm? I really need to get back into running. This is the best way I could describe it.

See an orthopedist. No way to diagnose or correct from here. You may need physical therapy.

No Question. See an experienced PT. YouŽll need to strengthen your back/pelvis muscles/ligaments and heŽll know how to train you

Low back pain brought on my muscle strain is best treated by a variety of self care techniques, and perhaps stopping the running for a week or so as those symptoms resolve

Sounds like it could also possibly be nerve-related as well, with how you describe the feeling moves up. Recently I seem to be getting more aches, pains, and odd feelings and I've spent a lot of time and money going to the doctor. I've realized that in the past I used to push myself too hard when running and just needed a break. I gave myself a break for a while and did low impact exercise instead, like using the elliptical machine. I can definitely say I can tell a big difference and my body doesn't tolerate running or jumping around as well anymore (I'm 25 by the way). You mentioned alignment... I am actually planning to see a chiropractor next month because that is one thing I haven't tried yet. The one I chose is a PT/chiro, so I will be curious to see what they recommend for me. I know chiropractic care isn't for everyone though! I would try taking a little break from the running and see if it still continues. Then I would consider physical therapy or some other kind of treatment to see what might be going on! Good luck!
