    Detached vitreous

I HAVE HAD A DETACHED VITREOUS THAT LASTS FOR A COUPLE MONTHS EACH TIME [5TIMES IN ALL. The symptoms are terrible and get get worse as each episode goes on. They start with flashing floaters that are like pinwheels or propellars of kaliescopic lights. Next it's like the floaters pick up snapshots off the back of my retina which piggyback around on the floaters. This goes on for days. Next the floaters multiply in number. Next things will turn gray and fuzzy and fade out. The next phase is the worst. I took LSD several time when I was 20 which was fifty years ago. And this phase is like a week long acid flashback. All shapes are distorted peoples faces, my dogs bodies my face and body. the walls stretch out or close in, my food changes colors and moves around on the plate. I have been to the ER, have had 2 MRIs and nothing is wrong except the detached pieces of vitreous. Eventually everything returns to normal for a couple years until it happens again. During these episodes I lose weight and have terrible eye migraines caused by my eyes always trying to focus or following the floaters. Does anyone else get these symptoms from a detached vitreous.

    Thanks Dugan

Have you been examined by a retina specialist? That's the MD who can tell you if a vitreous detachment has such long lasting effects.

My guess would be that you've been having episodes of optical migraine. These migraines usually don't cause pain but do cause the kind of symptoms you describe. They wouldn't show up on an MRI (perhaps on a functional MrI while an episode is occurring?) Vitreous detachments with resultant floaters are very common in older people so don't necessarily indicate a problem. But you should see a good retina specialist to be sure.

Thank you I went to my retinal ophthalmologist when this started. He couldn't help me, but I'm thinking of going to see a different one as the one I saw didn't seem to care to hear the symtoms I have when it happens.

You should definitely get a second opinion. You might look into a neuro-ophthalmologist, these doctors specialize in diseases of the eye which are caused by neurological disorders.

I get optical neuritis which is allot like you describe and my neuro-opth helps me with steroids to shrink the inflammation. It is a protocol though...IV steroids, not oral- for 5 days.

    Good luck!
