Hi Kendall...
I am interested in knowing if your ophthalmologist informed you whether or not you had any inflammation in your eye. It appears to me, based on waking up with blurred vision---or having it when you get up from laying down---that you may have some macula edema. See term papilledema.
When you have inflammation inside the eye, there can be many causes: Systemic, autoimmune, trauma, or idiopathic (will never know). And because the vision loss (sudden) is a sign of some serious conditions, you were referred for a workup (lab/MRI imaging).
Optic Neuritis is another condition that should be ruled out as it can affect the vision by having sudden vision loss. It is swelling of the optic nerve which can cause macula edema. See term Optic Neuritis. If you have this condition, you need to be treated ASAP with IV Solumedrol, tapered off with oral prednisone. A neurologist is a specialist that can treat ON and prescribe the IV treatment. The reason why a patient with ON needs this treatment is because statistics have shown those patients treated with it can prevent the onset of MS or delay it up to 5 to 10 years--maybe even 25 and, the IV solumedrol will help restore your vision. ON is a pre-cursor to MS.
Lastly, did you experience any "flashes" of light? The floaters that you are seeing, are they forming a web pattern? If so, you may have hemorrhaging in your eye. Do you have any type of occlusion? Artery or vein in your eye?
Not to say that its this condition but see the term Susac's Syndrome. The key is a Branch Retinal
Artery Occlusion, which the ophthalmologist can verify. It is a very rare disorder and can cause the confusion that you are experiencing. Some of the symptoms are migraine, hearing loss, ringing in the ears and because the symptoms are so similar to other conditions, it often gets misdiagnosed as a complicated migraine or even MS. See terms such as central retinal vein occlusion and Branch retinal artery occlusion.
It may be one or none of the above, but I thought I'd pass on what I've learned! Keep us apprised. Cal Sun
Vitreous floaters are what the previous post was referring you to.
