Grainy Vision

Greetings all,

I've popped over from the Thyroid board in hopes that someone can help me. I was hoping that a diagnosis of hypothyroidism would be my answer but after months on medication I'm still having problems. I have been experiencing grainy vision for the past several years. My eye exam has been fine and they literally laughed at me when I said I couldn't see well, they gave me eye drops and sent me on my way. I have this problem all the time. It makes reading (especially on a computer screen) very difficult. I guess it could be described as grainy or snowy. Any comments or suggestions of what could be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if it is opthamological or neurological or where to turn. Everyone thinks I'm crazy!

Thanks in advance,
Carol

Re: Grainy Vision

I hear SO much about "visual snow" there's probably a LOT on this board right here (type in "visual snow" in the upper right side of the page that says, "Search this board" and see what you can find.) Personally I've never experienced this, but many, many have....

Re: Grainy Vision

Hi Sunlover,

Thank you for the suggestion - you are right, there are quite a few posts. I haven't gotten any solutions, yet, but at least I'm pointed in the right direction.

Thanks, again,
Carol

Re: Grainy Vision

Hi,
I have had grainy vision for 9 years and I am now 36 years old. I've been to many Doctor's and they don't know what I'm talking about.
I don't believe it will ever go away and I just hope it doesn't get worse. I've learned to accept it.
When did it happen to you? Was it sudden. Mine happened when I was shopping in Wal Mart. It was like someone flicked a switch in my head and I immediately saw grainy from that point on. I tripped out and ran out of the store. That's been my vision ever since.

Re: Grainy Vision

Hi Guys - Sorry I didn't see your posts sooner, I've been off this board.

I don't know when it started, I can't pinpoint it but I do know that going into stores like WalMart really bothers my eyes - I walk around squinting to focus otherwise I feel like I'm just staring.

sk3499 - I get a royal blue spot - very quickly comes and goes - in my left eye. At night, in the dark the grainyness is more yellow - I would say - not white but an ivory or yellow color.

I have a visual field test now scheduled for April 8. Does anyone know much about this test and what it will show? I can see things I just have trouble focusing on them and my eye exam showed better than 20/20 vision with my glasses.

I'll pay more attention to this board - thanks for your responses.

Carol

Yes I do see afterimages - it doesn't really bother me but I do notice that I do see those images - any ideas about that?

Smile Re: Grainy Vision

I have allergies, and I have grainy vision. I also felt as though someone switched a light, and everything around me went into this weird fuzzy haze. I saw an optomotrist, they told me im fine, just some eye pressure. The MD gave me allegra. I'm totally clueless, been like this for six months, i feel disconnected and somewhat dreamy, and avoid certian lighting settings to stop the ackwardness. I've learned to live in what i call a "bubble". If anyones got an answer lemme know...

Re: Grainy Vision

Im 28 now and have had grainy vision since i was probably 17. eye specialists always find nothing wrong, other than i have an increased chance of retinal detachment so i get it checked every few years. I get after images from bright stuff, grainy vision, if i look at a blue sky, its very noticable. Night time too. My eyes are also very dry, and feel like they want to pop out of my head. I see floaters, (colored sometimes, clear sometimes) and everything was fine. 4 or 5 years ago i had an eeg, all normal, all blood tests normal.

I have high bp and get treated for it, thats about all.

So i guess some of us are lucky enough to just happen to see this stuff. I try not to think about it and have gotten pretty good at ignoring most of it. As long as the eye specialist gives me a clean bill, guess its nothing to be concerned over, more of just an annoyance....

Re: Grainy Vision

Thanks for your responses... I'm feeling disheartened because I'm hearing from you guys that there is little hope of them finding anything that can be fixed. I don't want to have to put up with this - it really affects the way I live. Makesally - you're right about the fuzzy haze. I have a vision field test on April 8th but I don't know what that will show. Anyone out there with good news???

Re: Grainy Vision

Hi everyone,
I've experienced grainy images myself and all my eye exams came back fine too. I just very recently found out that I wasn't the only one experiencing this. Before I thought I was the only one in the world, I told no one!
So what do your staticy/grainy images look like? Do you see it everywhere around you? I only see it at the surface of whatever it is I'm looking at, I don't see it in the air infront of me (does that make sense). I do see it at night also it is much more vivid at night.
Do you remember ow it onset was it after a trauma in your life or stressfull situation? I got mine after a really traumatic episode in my life that happened in 1994 and I still have it. Can you believe I told no one and just lived with it! I was scared that if I told people they would think I was crazy! So I just kept it to myself and it didn't really bother me until recently because it seems to be getting worse. Now I am definitley going to see a doctor!
Good luck to you all

Re: Grainy Vision

I just saw my opthamologist and everything was fine. I see ghosting of images sometimes too, and he told me it was due to changes in the surface of something (cant remember what) in your eye, and since i work on computers alot he called it an 'occupational hazzard'. Im sure its all related. some of us just notice more than others, i see floaters too, but its common....

Annoying, but i guess its better than going blind...

Re: Grainy Vision

Hi all,

I still have no answers... I had a vision field test which was normal - the opthamologist ordered an MRI of the brain to rule out tumor or MS - it was normal so here I sit... no answers.

I, too, work with a computer and under fluorescent lights and was wondering if that had any causality. Last week I was off and didn't use a computer or fluorescent lights and my vision was no better so I don't know. My eyes are dry, too, so I've used the eyedrops and nothing.

I do get migraines and the grainyness is almost like the start of a migraine. When I have a migraine, the grainyness progresses into larger areas that I can't see and then I get the shimmering triangles in all the colors of the rainbow. It seems like after I've had a migraine that my grainy or snowy vision is worse - slightly - but worse. When I look at a solid surface like a piece of paper it seems to pulse - extremely quickly and very slightly.

I've heard of something called persistant aura of migraine - anyone else???!?

This is really driving me crazy - and driving is driving me crazy - I just can't focus my eyes even though my vision is fine. Does that make sense?! I'm tired of feeling like an idiot when I talk to doctors about this. I can't adequately describe what's going on!!.. It's reassuring to know that there are others with similar problems, however no one has yet found a solution.

Thanks for all your input!!!
Carol
