many problems after cataract surgery a year ago

I had cataract surgery on both eyes a little over a year ago. Since then I notice a smokey white line that passes before each eye when I look from right to left or left to right. This bothers my vision a lot. I went back and had it checked and the dr. said that he wasn't sure it could be fixed but I could try laser surgery. Well, I didn't try it because I'm afraid it might make it worse instead of better. Since the surgery my eyes are VERY sensitive to light plus now both eyes water all the time. I am so disappointed. I wish I had never had the surgery done. I had small cataracts which didn't need to be removed right away but my local eye dr. told me that if I had the implants my vision would be so much better. Ha!!! It would be good if I didn't have all the problems I'm having. My distance vision is very good, but I'd rather wear glasses than have all these problems. Does anyone else who has had cataract surgery have any of problems like mine? HELP
    Kay

Yes, with the mono-focus implants, you lose all the near-vision you had left, and glasses are such a nuisance, always getting lost, broken, clouding up, sliding down your nose, never could get used to them.

Did you have some diabetic damage before having your cataracts removed? I did, and vision's actually not much if any better, but eventually I would have been blind. My retinopathy specialist couldn't see in and I couldn't see out. I think the multi-focal implants are 3-piece, if I'm not mistaken, so she would have had problems working around them. I had to have a capsulotomy of each eye almost immediately, which typically happens in about a year after cataract surgery.

Maybe that's your problem, a membrane developing or thickening? I would be tempted to get another opinion if your surgeon didn't even mention this. It happens so often. My glasses prescription was wrong also, and insurance doesn't pay for another pair for 2 yrs. My surgeon didn't offer to pay, even partially. I don't think I'm going back there. He didn't tell me about multi-focals, besides $400 wrong prescription.

Hi Eagle. Thanks for the reply. The doctor never told me anything about that. I have been having trouble from right after the surgery. I do think I will get another opinion, but if I need surgery again I am going to have to pay for it myself as I don't have eye insurance. My insurance did pay for the cataract surgery but I think that is the extent of what they will pay. I hate being like this. I always feel like I'm looking through something. It's hard to explain but is very aggrivating. You sound like you have been through a lot. I will let you know if I find anything more about what is going on with my eyes. My sister is 50 and having cataract surgery in April or May. Two months after that she's having Lasik surgery. I didn't know they could do that after cataract surgery. She said she is having the Lasik because her astigmatism is so bad. So is mine, so maybe that's my problem too. I think if hers turns out ok I will go see her surgeon. I'm really disappointed anyhow.

    Hi eagle.

    kady43,

I had a lot of disappointment after my cataract surgery 2 years ago.
I'm doing much better now that I have 3 pairs of glasses: One for driving and watching tv, another for reading and the computer that is a bifocal (so it's sort of like 2 pair of glasses in one), and a third pair that are very expensive progressives, which I wear most of the time at work.

When I drive somewhere, I put the progressives on top of my head and wear the driving glasses. Then I leave the driving glasses on the dash board and wear the progressives into the place where I am going.

I have pretty severe cloudiness in my left eye at dusk or night when my pupil expands, but I doubt the laser surgery to poke a hole in the clouded lens capsule will help, since the cloudiness is obviously not in the center where the hole would be poked.

By the way, I have astigmatism too.
Do you have new glasses since your surgery? And if so, what kind?
And what kinds of activities do you do?

    Hi, Serious!

I think you're mostly talking to Kady with the rest of your post, but
just so you have both her answer and mine, re cloudiness not in the center, I forget if you're one of the people with diabetic retinopathy damage. Don't think so. We need a larger reading area than progressives provide.

But if my memory's failing me and you are diabetic that may be scarring? I'm sure you've asked your doctor. I think I may have had the same worry, but really can't remember such a detail for sure once the capsulotomies were over.

Now I'm worrying, hope my excellent Retina Specialist understands and doesn't feel insulted, about maybe scheduling my first vitrectomy when I go for a checkup next week, and whether I may be too old at 71 and diabetic , to get better vision. Just read an article I found online that they did a study, dividing the operated patients into 4 groups, and the two younger groups did get better results.

If I wasn't interested at all in having Vitrectomies, I wouldn't be worrying, she should understand, right? Previous 8 or so procedures have been successful. She didn't do my cataract surgeries, but everything else.
