    Re: keratoconus

My sister has keratoconus. She has it in one eye only, and her drs fitted her with hard contact lenses to help treat it. Previous to that, she tried to use soft contact lenses. They told her she might have brought it on by rubbing her eyes, since she has had allergies for years.

    Re: keratoconus

Keratoconus is when the cornea becomes cone shaped and thin in certain spots. It usually is treated by having the patient wear specially fit contact lenses. The most common are hard or RGP (rigid gas perms). There are new lenses on the market now called hybrid lenses, which are hard in the center and soft on the outside. This helps to maximize comfort. Corneal transplants are usually only performed for the most serious cases in which contact lenses can no longer be used for fear of perforating the cornea.

My 28 year old daughter has keratoconus...it got worse very fast. She is scheduled for her first cornea transplant this Friday. The procedure will take 45 minutes and she will be put under. In 3 months they will do her other eye.She is 100% legally blind. I will know more once she has her surgery.
