What is this circle of lights in my vision

Does anyone know what this is or has experience with this?

For a few months now, I've been seeing a 'starburst' like pattern in my eyes. It lasts for about 10-15 min and slowly fades. I get it frequently, almost once a day or every couple days.

It starts out looking like bright flashes of colored lights in a circle around my central vision. It looks sort of like a wheel with spokes of color spots near the outer ends. The colors go from reds to blues, then grayish and fades to nothing.

I have no cliue what this is and nobody I know understands, even the eye drs I've seen. They say my eyes are healthy. I don't know if it could be a migraine related thing? I don't get headaches with it though.

Any input would be so appreciated! Thanks!

The fact that the doctors you have seen simply say that your eyes are healthy suggests that they are not at the right level. You should see a neuro-ophthalmologist or a neurologist. It could indeed be a migraine type of disturbance but it certainly needs more detailed investigation.

Hello Kabees and TopGeek,
I agree with TopGeek and I personally think a Neuro-Ophthalmologist is the best idea. I have a great one in OK City. Find the best one in your area. I don't have your exact problem but I do have bright sparkles and squiggly (spelling?) lines when I'm outside in bright light. And there are migraines without headaches. precious49 God Bless You and Yours Today and EveryDay

Re: What is this circle of lights in my vision

It does sound like a classic migraine aura. You could look up "migraine aura" for more information. You don't need to get a headache after one. I'm surprised your doctors didn't diagnose it, since you've described the visual effects perfectly.

Since you're getting this frequently, it would be wise to try to figure out the trigger. Rather than my listing them, you can look up migraine triggers.

Thanks guys.
I'm surprised the othalmologists I saw (3), didn't tell me more about the possibility of it being a migraine aura.

Are there medications anyone knows of that could help with this?

Thanks again

Usually Ibuprofen 200 is reasonably effective with regular migraine and it is worth a try while you are waiting for a proper diagnosis. It is unlikely that any other OTC medicine will be any more effective.

Re: What is this circle of lights in my vision

People who have disabling migraines are put on medication to prevent them. That wouldn't apply to you, and since you don't get a headache, even painkillers seem pointless. A natural substance to prevent migraines (don't know if it works) is feverfew.
There are a family of prescription drugs (Imitrex being one) that are taken at the first sign of an aura. I've found that the cure is worse than the disease. These drugs are vaso-constrictors and should only be taken when necessary.

There is also a handheld, battery operated gizmo that produces electro-magnetic waves to disrupt the neuron firing. I don't know if it's available yet or still in trials. It's called a transcranial magnetic stimulator.

Keela, with respect, Ibuprofen is not a painkiller. It is an anti-inflammatory and is often effective in cases where there is inflammation without necessarily any pain. It can also help to remove pain by reducing inflammation. In any case, there is no harm in trying it.

Sorry TG, didn't mean to be critical. In fact, ibuprofen is all I take when I get an aura, just in case it develops into a headache.

Re: What is this circle of lights in my vision

Hello Kabees,

I am really, really hoping that you're still participating on Health Boards. I have read through many of your posts and am stunned by the similarities in our symptoms...even down to the star-like projections from my central vision. The bright spots that come and go all day, 24 hours a day, have become so severe that it's beginning to take over my vision. I am terrified that I'll soon be blind. This all started 10 months ago and has rapidly progressed.

Do you notice that the spots appear in much greater numbers upon standing, bending over, hot showers, i.e., changes in blood pressure.

Please let me know if you ever found an answer and how your vision is today. Please.

Thank you.
