do you have pigment disperson syndrome & autoimmune disease?

Does anyone have pigment dispersion syndrome along with an autoimmune disease? My regular eye doctor just told me my pigment from my iris is flaking off and I have dry eyes. That is all he said...I don't know when to go back and get a check-up or anything, so I may see an opthamologist just to get a little more information.

Anyway, I am fairly young, and for the past 6 years have had individual and fairly rare problems with just about every part of my body...kidneys, joints, bowels, female stuff...

Some of my doctors (I see many specialists now) think I have an autoimmune disease, but they can't figure out which one. The most recent "mystery" problem is this pigment dispersio syndrome, so I was curious if anyone else has this along with an autoimmune disorder. thanks!

You do need to be treated by an ophthalmologist for PDS - untreated it can lead to increased internal eye pressure, damage to the optic nerve and pigmentary glaucoma.

PDS is inherited but there's no connection between PDS and autoimmune disease that I know of - however, dry eye and autoimmune disease are tightly connected. It's commonly seen in Sjogren's Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Reiter's, Juvenile Arthritis and Vasculitis. (pretty much any connective tissue disease)

I had cloudy vision in on eye...came on overnight...opthomologist saw flaking of pigment and I had some color blindness as well...sent to neuro-opthomologist and given MRI as it got progressively worse... a case of optic neuritis or inflammation of the optic nerve...which is symptomatic for MS and auto-immune disorder....so you might want to get further tests

Thank you jamis for writing back. I really appreciate your thoughts. A few years ago they thought I had MS because I had a brain MRI after experiencing muscle spasms and pain in my head. The MRI showed a few lesions, but an MS specialist didn't think it was MS.

Now, a few years later, I keep adding more symptoms that they aren't putting together. Truly just about every part of my body has some symptom but nobody can put it together.

When I found out about the pigment flaking, I just felt in my heart that it is another clue to something bigger going on, but I don't know how to figure it all out. Maybe I do have MS after all. I guess I just have to keep after my doctors...

    Yeah...
This all happened to me in the space of last week
I did have the pigment flaking as well

I am on steroids for the eye...and they have given me a preliminary diagnosis of MS...though I do not have any other symptoms (just the eye and lesions so far)

Ive talked to two DRs and 3 Nero-ophthomologists so far

One Dr told me they had to do a spinal to be sure...the others seemed to think it was classic and I should go on the drugs but I am reluctant to do that until I have more conclusive info as well...or more symptoms

I would be highly interested in knowing more of your diagnosis if you find any more out

I am doing my own research and trying to find out about possible related diseases

Id be happy to share anything I learn

One question do you have an history of tick bites or working with solvents?

Thanks for writing again. No, I don't have a history of tick bites or working with solvents. My problems seemed to be triggered during a pregnancy 6 years ago.

About your pigment flaking...did the doctors say it is flaking from your iris or some other part of your eye?

If I find anything out soon, I'll let you know!

    Hi,
Yes, he said from the iris. He was the original Dr I went to. I had vision clouding in the left ..He said my eyes were physically fine and all that he could find was some pigment flecking...and slightly slower dialation in that eye. I wasn't even aware of the colorblindness until he did the little book and number test...of which I could still see partial color at that time...he sent me to the neuro-opthomolist and I got the MRI and the neuritis diagnosis and probable ms

Re: do you have pigment disperson syndrome & autoimmune disease?

Hi, I have been diagnosed with pigment dispersion syndrome (connected to my high myopia), but it isn't actively flaking - I've had a serial stress test; current doctor in a different location isn't even calling it pds. Separately, I have been suspected of having autoimmune disease due to two different and 'unrelated' medical emergencies (one obstetric, the other retinal), but nothing has been found following very extensive bloodwork. Now, I do know that autoimmune disease can harm the optic nerve by harming retinal cells (i.e. resulting in normal pressure glaucoma), but I personally don't know of any linkage with pds - but haven't checked ... I always understood that the pigment was caused by my high myopia - the eyes are apparently stretched and the pigment rubs off. I didn't pursue it because that seemed like a good explanation.
