    Sclera problem

    Hi,
Yesterday when i was standing in front of a mirror, i noticed a very unusual thing in my eyes.
The white part of the eye or sclera (as i got it from google) became somewhat like a loose skin! I was really scared to see that.
Then i tried to push the lower part of my eye upwards just to check and i was really shocked to see the white part actually forming layers just as a loose skin would form when u try to squeeze it.
I dont think this is normal.

Please suggest what the problem could be.

    Thanks

    Re: Sclera problem

What you are actually seeing is the conjunctiva, which is the clear mucous membrane overlying the white sclera. The conjunctiva can become loose and edematous from various causes (conjuncitivitis, allergies, dry eyes...). If it's new, you should see your eye doctor to see what the cause is.

    Re: Sclera problem

    Hi ankurs-

I saw the same thing this morning. I'm a soft contact lens wearer, and was feeling some itching in my left eye last night. I took my lenses out and was rubbing my eye somewhat vigorously for a few seconds.

I didn't think too much of it at the time, but this morning I noticed that the sclera was pink, and there is some conjunctival edema (chemosis) evident. It looks a bit like a water blister. There's no pain or itching today.

What do you think caused your condition, how did you treat it, and how long did it take to subside?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Re: Sclera problem

    Hi Mike,

This problem was due to excessive dryness in my eyes.Since I am a software developer, i have to sit in front of the monitor for long periods which usually results in dryness of eyes. I took some hydrating eye drops and it became normal in a couple of days. There is nothing to worry.
You might be facing the same issue.

    Re: Sclera problem

Thanks, ankurs, for the reassuring and quite prompt reply. I too spend a lot of time in front of a monitor (engineer) and have somewhat dry eyes. I do have some hydrating drops I can use...I'll give that a try.
